They have come a long way since I worked for them in Morton, Ill in 1970.  They didn't look like that back then.  Biggest thing we had was a Double D-9.

I've seen a lot of cougars, but that sucker is huger by far than most.  Mast run about 120 to 145 pounds in the part of the Rockies where I lived.

our alarm clock

You're laughing.  Cat Rourk would stick his nose in my ear & purr like a buzzsaw five minutes before the alarm went off.  Every. Day.

Buster Peterson & my 1st boss designed the Dual D9 & the long ripper to rip the hard pan in Kern County so that water wouldn't build up to the point where the water level reached crop roots.  Peterson Tractor's Special Equipment Dept. designed & built tandem D9's called a Quad Track which primary function was to push scrapers.  The Peterson Special Equipment Dept. proving ground was where the Blackhawk subdivision in Danville.

Is this the Double D9?

Yes & no.  That is a tandem dual D9 for PUSH CAT service.  The CAT engine dealer I worked for from March 1978 through Dec 2012 & built the 1st dual D9's which were called Quad Tracks.  It was used to push scrapers to reduce the cycle time of the scrapper it pushed.  It also reduced the contractors labor cost by only requiring one operator for a pair of dozers.  The side by side dual D9 doubled the drawbar pull & downforce on the ripper blade.
