But Chinese president Xi Jinping, speaking on the eve of the AUKUS announcement, warned Australia was making an “expensive mistake” and that Beijing would continue to grow its military to counter the perceived threat.

He addressed the National People’s Congress on Monday saying the military would be bolstered to create a “great wall of steel”, labelled security the “bedrock of development” and accused Western colonial powers of “national humiliation”.

I think we need more fast attack subs in the Pacific, hence the Australia - United states deal.
China is boasting a larger surface Navy. Our Navy Secretary says we can’t keep up. Why try. Build subs. Fast attack and boomers.

I believe this still needs Congress approval.

Would there be any reason they would say no?

Sale of U.S. Virginia Class Submarines. Beginning in the early 2030s, pending approval from the U.S. Congress, the United States intends to sell Australia three Virginia class submarines, with the potential to sell up to two more if needed.

They might want to beef up what we DONT have on land instead of in the water...socialist Prime minister DH ..let's face it any asian neighbouring country could take Australia with virtually no resistance...sad state of affairs when our defence force has been neglected by all sides of government for years & now they spend our money [ taxpayers ] that they don't have for a paltry few subs...send $$ to Ukraine to help even the citizens to arm themselves yet would the same consideration be given to Australians...not likely as we can't be trusted or have the right to defend ourselves..nothing but bastards the lot of em'  !!
