Why no mention of A10?

Howdy,

Seems like the Russians are fighting the war in Ukraine with rows and rows of tanks.

The Ukrainians are asking for F16 all the time and Abrahms tanks as well.

What about the one tool in the box originally designed for tank swatting...the A10??????

I have been following the coverage of this past year and never once heard A10 mentioned.

And they dont have to be built as A10s are sitting around doing pretty much nothing.

Any pards have any contacts in Ukraine?

Any ideas about sending A10s??????

Just wondering.

Best

The A-10 is only survivable in uncontested air space.  It won't last long against modern fighter jets or guided ground fired missiles.  However, watching 40 miles of traffic jammed Russian tanks on a two lane road a few months ago did make me think that about 6 A-10's could end this war today.

I think after 100 Billion and now taxpayers funding the Ukraine retirement pensions and salaries for another 500 million they can Try to finally stand on their own self and buy their own with all that funding you would think that more that 30 %  would make it to the Army and they wouldnt be running out of ammo right now .
They want A10s they can buy them

We may as well be dealing with the Duchy of Grand Fenwick

Few take into consideration the inflationary effects of decades of foreign interventions and foreign aid, the effective devaluation of the American dollar as a result and the decreased value of the American worker in the world market place as state side wages must rise to adjust for cost of living.

We are freely handing out money backed by nothing more than debt and the printing presses themselves that serve only to print and devalue the currency we already have.

The PTB in the Air Farce* will never allow the A-10's to be deployed to the Ukraine.  Ukraine would use them with great success and that would clash with those in the Air Farce that want the A-10 decommissioned permanently.

*I respect the vast majority of those that serve in the Air Force.  However it was a mistake to allow the Army Air Corp to become it's own branch of service.  These days the leadership only wants things that are new and shiny and close air support is neither.  The PTB would very much like to see the A-10 gone and that money used for more F-35's or B-21's

There is a limited number of warthogs. We will not sell or give them away until there is an acceptable replacement.

We don't NEED a replacement. we just need to make more. Over the years there have been independent studies made to determine what is needed to replace the A10. The answer has ALWAYS been the A10.

We tried that during the last Presidential and the recent State elections. The stupid politicians cheated, and so kept their jobs. Part of which is promoting incompetent military leadership.

Sandy = A-1 Skyraider.  Used for CAS and SAR in Vietnam.   And those were scrapped decades ago

The Navy & AF quite using the A-1 "Spad" in VN when the air frames were knackered and required manufacturing new fuselages.  The same reason the A-26's were withdrawn.  The wings had been replaced.  Those radial engines generate high levels of vibration that kills the elasticity of metal.  "Sandy" is the call sign for search & rescue aircraft.  The Navy nickname for the A-1 was "Spad".

It appears, we are, belatedly, beginning to do what is necessary to effectively destroy the Russian army, by proxy. Sadly, Putin is engaging in crimes against humanity by bombing hospitals, schools, and apartment buildings, killing and wounding thousands of innocent Ukrainian civilians.  He is also freeing up space in his prisons by sending the inmates to Ukraine as cannon fodder! What happens when he runs out of brig rats?

Why should we spend all this money to help Ukraine?  Because if Putin were to win in Ukraine, under the premise that he is "simply" recovering parts of Russia, he might then go after former portions of the Soviet Union, including Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, and Finland.  That would trigger Article 5 of the NATO treaty, and would mean WWIII! Hopefully, if Putin doesn't see the light soon, maybe some of his associates might decide it is time for him to retire to his dacha, above or below ground!

I am re-reading "The Cuban Missile Crisis".  It is really scary what could have happened if Khrushev hadn't come to his senses.  I was in college at the time, and well remember President Kennedy's address to the country, in which he said that any attack on the United States from Cuba would be regarded as an attack by the Soviet Union on the U.S. and would be met with an appropriate response!  I remember praying that the Russians had control of the missiles rather than the Cubans. Turns out I was wrong! The Cubans did have control of the missiles, only the Russians had control of the warheads, and, fortunately, the Russian colonel in charge of the warheads refused the Cuban demands that he turn the warheads over to them.

From a military standpoint and leaving politics and economics out of it , as mentioned the A10 need to operated in an environment of air superiority as it is a ground attack aircraft and not capable of engaging in dogfights. The Ukes will not achieve air superiority without an infusion of advanced fighter aircraft.

Excellent analysis.

Putin is using the same tactics Stalin used against the Germans in The Great Patriotic War. Massive amounts of artillery bombardment and human wave attacks regardless of casualties. Only Stalin used large number refugees pushed into the German machine guns first causing the Germans to expend all of their ammunition and wear out the barrel of the machine guns after several days of non-stop human wave attacks. Only difference this time is Putin doesn’t have refugees to use so he is trying to use criminals that are in prison instead as cannon fodder.

This war is causing NATO and the U.S. to realize how much munitions are needed when fighting a near peer opponent. Putin has totally misjudged the consequences of starting this war and has given a huge wake-up call to the rest of Europe.
