Stuck case

Recommended Posts

First time for everything, had a case seperate and part of it's stuck in the chamber of my 73 in 44-40. Any good ideas on how to get it out? I've been soaking it with Kroil and tried pushing it out with a bronze brush.

I am not a gunsmith.

My view is no steel tools. The brass from the casing should not scratch the chamber, but dirt could as easily as steel.

Perhaps try to catch an edge with a wooden dowel and try some light tapping with a small hammer?

On edit: I yield to RSE above

Yep, a slug tapped through from the muzzle with a rod. A bronze brush won't work unless you can shove it into the broken case from the breech end then pull it out. You have to stop the brush inside the broken case, then pull back.

Bob...would one of the stuck case removers that you lever in work? Not sure what calibres they are made in. Would one for a 45 colt work?

Got it out, I looked online for a tool, but couldn't find the right caliber.

Instead of using a modern hard lead slug, try instead a .454 or .457 lead round ball. Dead soft lead is much easier to swage into a barrel.

The purpose built broken case extractors usually work, but not always.

I had one last week in 38sp. This handy tool worked!

I think this was a stuck case, not a separated one.

No a .30-06 broken case remover will not work, that one grabs only a .30 caliber case.  Most of the case removal tools catch on the mouth of the case.

Something that works for me is to Cerrosafe cast the chamber and half an inch of the throat, then within 10 minutes tap a brass rod down the bore to remove both the Cerrosafe and the case fragment.  Not friendly in the field, as you need boiling water temps to melt the alloy.

Have never seen a broken case remover for .44 caliber cases.  I carry one in .45 cal for my SASS guns.   I carry a .38 just to help other cowboys.  And I carry a 30-06 remover for my 308 and 30-06 rifles at rifle matches.

Glad the upset slug in the bore worked for you!   That is my fall back before I really start worrying.

good luck, GJ

Is there a risk of bending a lever when using them?

Nope, the fit to the throat of the case is pretty tight.   My .45 colt remover does not fit in a .44-40 case, even when expanded right after firing.  Just checked it.

Too bad that the industry has trimmed down the line of stuck case removers to just a few.   It took a lot of work finding one for 30-06, and I surely cannot find one for 6.5 cases.

good luck, GJ

I have 44-40, 45 colt, 38/357 Echo Broken shell extractors, W J Riebe Co.

Though not made anymore.  Would be nice if they were still available.  They have saved many a rifle over the years at matches, I carry them in my gun cart.
