Greyhound

I saw a movie yesterday that was pretty good that was on a subject rarely covered in films as well. It wasn’t named after a dog breed though.

I've had the DVD for a couple of months, but never sat down to watch it until last night.  Thai is a darned good movie about a subject that has hardly been covered in films.

Mind if I ask where you found the DVD?

I've been on the lookout for it since the movie was first announced; only recently did I see it at Amazon for something approaching forty bucks - and now it's "Not Available."

Greyhound is a movie based on C S forester story about a destroyer escorting a convoy across the Atlantic starring Tom Hanks. Some if the scenes were filmed in Baton Rouge on the USS kidd.  It was so loud and full of action my wife went next door and said she could still hear it!

Hanks has been in a lot of very good movies, and has produced a lot of good stuff, too, such as Band of Brothers.

Greyhound was a little under the radar, maybe because it was released mid-Covid and didn't have much of a theatrical release.

Never even heard of the movie , but I’m not a big fan of Hanks!

You don't have to be a TH fan to enjoy this movie. As RG pointed out it was released during the height of the covid lockdowns and didn't get enough exposure.

  Well, now I'll have to see the movie.  In my jr. college English Literature class I wrote a term paper contrasting the portrayal of the naval officer figure in media with the reality as evidenced in non-fiction history books.  Used Cruel Sea, Cain Mutiny, and The Good Shepherd, along with some excerpts from Samuel Morrison's work.

That was back when I could think straight.....

I don’t avoid his movies I just don’t pay much attention to any advertising of his movies. I did like Band of Brothers and Forest Gump though.

I've seen some of the You tube clips from the movie and they looked pretty good.  As already mentioned, it's release in the movie theaters was impacted by Covid and the rights to show the movie were bought by Apple +.  It looks like there were not very many DVD's released, as I am finding that more and more the streaming services are NOT releasing those movies & TV shows that they have the rights to on DVD.    If people want to re-watch something they liked, they can no longer buy the DVD.  It's probably a way to keep people subscribed to the streaming service.

I think the movie 'The Cruel Sea' does a better job of telling the story of what convoy escorts went through during WWII.  Nicholas Monsarrat, the author of the book of the same name that the movie is based on, served on several escort ships* performing convoy duty during WWII.

Most convoy escorts were corvettes, frigates (called destroyer escort by the U.S.) and WWI converted British V&W and American 4 Piper destroyers, both kinds having some of the engine machinery & boilers replaced with more fuel tanks to get the extended range.

I ordered the DVD when the movie first came out but it had not been released yet. A few months later Amazon finally sent it to me on 22 Nov 2021.  It's currently not available but, hopefully, they'll re-release it again.

I can't remember how much I paid for it but it certainly was not forty bucks.

Damn good movie even if you are not a Tom Hanks fan, which I am not.

I've always liked Tom Hanks. Certainly never have seen a performance that put me off. Of course, there are better actors, but he seems at worst inoffensive and some of his movies have been very good. I think his main appeal is as an 'everyman' type.

Greyhound is a tight story of a single convoy, with plenty of naval action. It has a very minimal backstory. One of the things I liked about it was the "compactness" of the story, for lack of a better way of putting it.

It was a movie made for Apple TV+.  It had a very limited theatrical release in just a few cities.  It never played in my area.  When I bought my new IPhone I got a trial subscription to Apple TV+ so I watched Greyhound and Ted Lasso.

Close.  Actually was acquired by Apple after distribution got messed up by covid.

Greyhound was initially scheduled to be theatrically released in the United States on June 12, 2020, by Sony Pictures Releasing, but was eventually canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic after previously being delayed indefinitely. The distribution rights were then sold to Apple TV+, which released the film digitally on July 10, 2020.
