About half-century ago, I did have access to, and handled classified documents, but always made sure they were properly secured in the proper facilities. But then again, I am not now and never have held a public position or office, regardless of political affiliation, nor do I intend to run for any office! Not secret, not classified, I was just real good at some stuff. A few times I even went into special facilities to do my special stuff where I had to leave my cell phone, car keys, and even my wallet at the front desk. They turned on a red flashing light upon my escorted entry. I heard a bunch of stuff get put away. Drawers slammed, keys turned tumblers on combo locks spun. Walking by cubicles, I saw people reading normal news papers and trade journals. I was paid a bunch per hour, but damn! Having me in the facility was clearly incredibly expensive. Made me feel appreciated. Still have no idea what they were actually working on in those buildings and rooms, and it was obvious nobody wanted me to know. I was just one of those people that could make a computer run really fast doing stuff without actually knowing what the computer was actually doing. None of it ever left the structure or facility I was working on or in. I don’t recall any tests but I do recall audits. I worked for an international corporation for a couple of years. Corporate espionage was a big deal and they tested you by showing up in a bar where you were staying and trying to weasel information from you after they thought you were intoxicated when you were away from home. They would also go through your drawers at work and make a big to-do about confiscating your laptop to scan it. Flippin’ Keystone Cops meets The Naked Gun. It worried me for awhile, and then I realized that all I had to do was mentally pronounce that the documents were no longer classified. And the pronouncement need only be to myself! In the Corps I held a Secret clearance and had to wait two months for it before I could enter and / or work in a weapons storage area....while a commercial farming company worked crops in the same area with undocumented aliens, until Immigration put a stop to it after about a year. No wait, three, maybe even four or five. classified manuals are constantly updated, you receive an update, pull out the superseded pages, put in the replacements. Easy enough, right? One of the SGTs, SGT of B battery screwed it up, he deleted too many pages. After all is done the deleted pages were burned. After a while, it was noticed that pages were missing from his -20s, oh crap, what do we do? Ordered a new set of manuals and certified that the old ones were destroyed and hoped the missing pages never showed up. I was SGT of C battery, I misplaced, IIRC, 5 manuals, some Secret, some Secret Restricted Data*. Oh crap, looked around. Finally B battery said , “hey we have them.” ———— * the difference is Secret stuff is worth 5 years and/or $5000, SRD is 20 and/or 20, each, a whole manual is the same as one page.
