Relief factor, Balance of Nature, Relaxium etc. These are are being pushed by celebrities, Gov. Huckabee, Dr. Gorka, all the radio people, Buck and Travis, Dana Loesch etc etc!

Are these the new Snake oil salesmen we've all seen on episodes of Gunsmoke and old westerns? Does any of this stuff actually work??

They should be run out of town!!:P

P.S. I tried Bio Flex for a month straight, didn't do squat!

I have tried numerous glucosamine supplements. Bio Flex didn’t do much. This one that I buy at Costco is the best I have tried. Also, it takes more than a month to feel the benefits of glucosamine supplements. It also takes a couple of weeks to realize the good they were doing once you stop them after taking them for 3 or more months.

Yes! Snake Oil. Kind of like “essential oils” another batch of snake oil.

That's what I tried and it didn't work. How long do you have to take it? I took it for about a month and a couple weeks. Zip, nadda!!

What is interesting is that I have smart, educated friends who have had various things work well for them, glucosamine and chondroitin for example.  Didn't work for me.  I'm taking one now that one of my kids recommended.  Can't really say if it works or not, but generally I'm feeling better, so I continue to take it.  I suppose to see if it does anything, I'd have to come off it for a month.  I'll go with feeling better.

It depends on exactly what the condition is. I was having difficulty with a knee and started glucosamine. Results were slow after  about 60 days I saw improvement and eventually much better.

I always check with my doc, Consumer Reports and independent reviews before trying anything. The bulk of these patent supplements are not regulated or tested by the FDA. Their claims are often very exaggerated at best.

Surgeon recommended I try some form of chondroitin after knee & shoulder replacements - would say which bran to try though.  Also told me to do a bit more with reds & greens (fruits & veggies) not just red meats & potatoes.  The chondroitin has helped with a bit more flexibility, the reds powder is good but the green taste like I was haying & ate a what I hayed & you tend to belch it for a while.  I switched to that Balance of Nature but still had issues with the greens & quit taking them as they didn't mix well with the meds.  But I did notice a bit of an energy boost after about 1 1/2 months.  For the most part the ones advertised are not any better than a generic.  Cylinderell compared them at the store and found they have the same ingesrediants at almost the same dosages.  Some work for some people and not for others - depends on what your taking them for & your expectations.  I guess it comes down to try them if you want, if they work for you the yeh ha, if not well, don't get any more.

A 2016 study of glucosamine and chondroitin enrolled 164 patients with knee pain due to osteoarthritis and gave half of them a combination of glucosamine and chondroitin; the other half received an identical placebo pill. The study was stopped early for an unusual reason: those taking the supplement actually reported worse symptoms than those taking a placebo. This raises the possibility that taking glucosamine and chondroitin might make your joints feel worse than doing nothing.

Rye, UB’s experience matches mine. It took a couple of months the first time I tried glucosamine. Then after a few years I quit taking it. Within 2 weeks I realized the that it had been working. I switched to Glucosamine with Condroiten and MSM. After a year or so it seemed like it stopped helping. I then switched to the Bi-Flex I posted above and it has worked fine for me. I still get pains but nothing like it used to be.

If its inflammation based pain increasing your omegas can decrease inflammation.

Gloucosamine/chondroitin with msm contains precursor alleles to cartridge. Its a nutrient that gives your body building blocks to repair cartrilidge, ligaments or tendons.

Won't work immediately but might over time

Human beings can fool themselves easily.  Double blind experiments with statistical analysis aren’t perfect but are better than anecdotal endorsements.

Any medicines that are advertised on tv…save your money and buy guns and ammo.  You will feel better.

These supplements work for some. They do not always work for all.

Kind of like the government. ;)

From my research there are two kinds of Gloucosamine; Gloucosamine Sulphate and Gloucosamine Hydrochloride. They each work a little differently and depending on the root cause of your joint pain one may be better than the other.

Note the possible interactions with other medications. While you should ask your doctor about interactions between OTC meds and perscription meds, the best person to ask is your pharmacist. Identifying possible drug interactions is a big part of their job.

That's a bit surprising. Years ago I was in my vet's office and there was a bottle of glucosamine injection on his desk. He said they used it in large animals for joint pain. I've been a pharmacist since 1985 and have seen a zillion gimmicks come and go, but gluc and chondroitin has been around for decades. This one seems to be standing the test of time. FWIW. 164 patients studied is a small population to say the least.

True, a small study group. However, there are many supporting articles. Arthritis Research did a review of various studies and found:

Finally, it is important to note that the majority of the published clinical trials with glucosamine reported a significant ratio of subjects who failed to respond to treatment. Therefore, the question of the benefit of glucosamine treatment remains largely unanswered. One may wonder about the clinical relevance of this treatment and whether to use it with regards to the cost/benefit ratio.

It doesn't hurt to take the supplement, but to me it is money down the drain. You know about the placebo effect.

I’m with Pat. I noticed that knee pain returned to higher levels, after 2-3 weeks when I stopped taking the same brand he posted. I’m sure “results may vary” is an accurate statement.

Glucosamine and Chondroitin has helped my hips a LOT. Before I started the stuff, some days there wasn't a comfortable position I could be in. Sitting, standing, OR laying down, my hips just HURT. The last time I looked at Walmart, they had Glucosamine Sulfate and Potassium Chloride. After 2 weeks, I could tell the difference, and found some Glucosamine and Chondroitin. I'm sticking with that. I just wish I could find something for my shoulders.

You could well be right 'Bones. What impressed me besides the long use is that vets use it. Don't know how much placebo effect takes place when you shoot a horse up with it! ;)

I give it to my dogs, just in case... I know orthopedists who recommend it to people, just in case... It can't hurt, but it probably won't help. I certainly don't denigrate anyone who takes it. We don't know everything in medicine, and a health care provider who says they do is a fool.

I tell this to patients who ask these questions all the time. Far as I know it won't hurt you. Worth a try.

If you would PM me your phone number, maybe we can talk medicine sometime about COVID and such. One of my oldest and dearest friends is an MD, and we talked at length about the pandemic and such. I figured out pretty quick I valued my friend and my personal MD's medical opinions a lot more than. Dr. Fauchi and his political talking points.

I thought about buying some Prevagen, until I saw the price. Got to wonder if that is expensive snake oil or does it really work.

I've had a customer who spends a pile of money on that for he and his wife. For a few years. Not an endorsement, just anecdotal statement. I've heard stories thru the years about prescription drugs. One says it's a miracle drug, the next said it's worthless. And that's true, what works on one may be crap for the next. Give it a try, if it don't work don't buy it no more.
