Anyone ever go to a military school?

I'm watching the Private War of Major Benson. Charlton Heston has annoyed the army and they gave him a choice. Be the commandant of this military school or find another job.

I noticed that the kids at this school wear different insignia then the army. They wear stripes - private corporal sergeant - but the officer insignia is completely different.

And I've noticed that all of the boys - this school goes from first grade to about eighth - salute with their thumb tucked under their hand.

So I was wondering if anyone had ever actually attended a military school, and if so they could confirm that officer insignia was different and that people salute different.

It seems quite strange, but lots of stuff about the military seems strange to me. :P

Yep....there was Army, Air Force, Navy and Royal Pipe Band at Scots College.

And yes us in the Army and also the Royal Pipe band wore kilts......that was a lot of fun in the early '70s on public transport.....wasn't so bad for the boys who boarded!

We had SMLE .303s in the armory and we would be issued them on Fridays before range day on Saturday mornings and before the two week annual bivouac at the year at Singleton Australian Army Base. We'd take them home on public transport (trains, ferry's and buses depending on where students lived)and none of the public blinked an eye. In the mid 70's most of the SMLE's went except some for ceremonial duties and we were issued the 7.62mm SLR and again, no one in the public blinked at boys carry SLRs on public transport......how times have changed!

Yes. Typically the insignia are different. AS far as the salute, that’s probably a clueless director.

Officers wore insignia similar to those in both high school and college ROTC (1957-1965), but enlisted insignia were Korean era vintage stripes.

Enlisted wore OD with Ike jackets, officers wore "pink and greens".  Both wore brown shoes in high school, black in college.  Both wore black four-in-hand neck ties.

2d Lt - one disk

1st Lt - two disks

Cpt - three disks

Maj - one diamond

Lt Col - two diamonds

Col - three diamonds

I had to go back and look at my year books to remember all this.  My God, we were young!

When the major first shows up he saluted by a kid who appears to be in charge, and the major looks at the boy's collar, which has two things on it (not bars - looked kind of like diamonds), and says, with a noticeable hesitation, "Thank you - captain", and the boy says, "I'm a colonel, sir". :D

The closest I got to military school as a kid was the threat of being sent there.

My dad took me on a tour of Howe Military Academy when I was 14.......

Attended High School and graduated 1959 at RMA in Gainesville, GA.  It was Junior ROTC.  Officers wore ROTC insignia, all other ranks wore traditional US Army chevrons.  Salutes were traditional US Armed Forces as were all forms of drill.  Our weapons were M1 Garands with the firing pins removed..  Most of all our military arts instructors were WWII and Korea veterans and one had even spent time as a POW in Germany.  They did not cut us any slack..  When I went to basic with the Air Force in 1963 I thought it was child's play and could not understand the moaning of others in my flight.

My Dad took me to the Sheriffs office and they locked me up for an hour or so. There were no academies nearby.

My mother tried that once and the nice policeman explained to her that was not what they were there for. She was way more PO'd on the ride home.
