Speaking of groceries....

I assembled a spread sheet of all my shopping needs, and then make the circuit of 5 supermarkets to find the best prices.
Costco is always packed to standing room only.. it takes most of the day to shop.

I have started using the Internet to determine store pricing rather than driving around. A couple of years ago this wasn’t always accurate. Now I have had pretty good luck with this.
I tried using phone apps but they annoyed me so I deleted them.

I asked, because there is no free lunch.

For example, TX property tax rate is almost 4x higher than CA.
It used to be this was a lower cost for housing, before all the CA moved in and the housing prices went through the roof.

My bro-in-law had a stunning home in Plano TX, all brick, two story, 4k square feet, and less than half of our rat trap here in CA.
Not any more.

The property tax man rubs his hands with glee over the last housing sales, because the price of houses has inflated so much, with all the folks fleeing the Blue states with pockets full of money.

I’m in Ohio and I was just talking about the price of eggs and gas

Yeah, I know.
One can buy a whole lot of eggs for $8,000 to $12,000 in property taxes.
My maw-in-law was spending just under $8,000 yearly in property taxes in NY, for a 1920s era house.

We wanted to flee the CA B.S. but found moving anywhere else will be a whole lot more expensive than staying put.
We pay more for fuel, but I drive less than 5,000 miles each year.

Corporate business trips took me frequently to Columbus... in 25+ years of travel, that was the most friendly place I ever visited.
In February.... Jeeeesusss it was cold.  I always drew Columbus in the dead of winter.

Folks love to bash CA (well deserved), but those ills are fast spreading nationwide with diesel, illegals, gun laws, woke crap, etc.
Every bad idea in the world has crawled out of either CA or NY, but eventually makes its was into the other states as well.

We see the same here, Forcing many life long elderly residents on a fixed incomes  to sell their homes that they worked their entire lives for because they no longer can  afford  taxes and Insurance . Thanks Blue state freedom freeloaders

Sam's today; Chicken drumsticks - $.98 lb, Store brand smoked bacon $3.55 lb, Milk 1% - $3.78 gallon. Didn't get gas but $3.29 gallon regular average at non club stations. Property taxes are 1/2 as much as homeowners insurance and it's about to get worse. Seems like the folks that WORK the hardest for their money are the ones who get screwed in both the short term and long term.

Socialism at its finest. Don't forget this crap at election time.

With all these prices going up I'm forced to ask "Are the farmers getting even a penny more for eggs, milk, meat or anything else?"

This is government driven inflation that amounts to economic terrorism.

There is nothing here that can't be cured by a change of government official and their minions and followers.....either up or down!

We are selling our house because we do not want to stay put anymore, and because of our finances  we can't afford to do the traveling we want to

A lot of price increases come from minimum wage increases. Friend in the Motel business, said they had to increase rooms 50 to 65% because of paying house cleaners, supplies, etc. Wages go up so do prices for the products they provide. Look at Fast Food prices  besides groceries etc.

What’s wrong with those of us that stay up all night. Must be a lack of meat and eggs

Whatever you're doing to stay up all night should definitely be marketed.

Trust me I’d rather be sleeping. Last night I went to bed at 830. Actually stayed in bed for the most part til 930 am. However because of this sinus and lung crap going around I was running and 102 fever. Had to cancel blood work and an appt with my pulmonologist. Tested negative for covid. I don’t think you want to market a lack of sleep.

If the PRoK didn't have Prop 13 freezing your property taxes you all would have been in this boat 20 years ago.

Here its called work.  Customer does flight testing at night so here I am. They are 2 hours behind schedule, but the testing is short tonight so I'll be home by 0200 if I am lucky.

Last week we were here till from 1600 till 0330 the next day doing nothing but waiting. They were delayed on their end preventing them from taking off. Finally at 0300 they scrubbed the mission and we got to go home.

True this!

I knew a number of older folks "back in the day" who were forced to leave their paid-for homes when they were taxed beyond their ability to pay those taxes.

Leading up to the 1978 vote, powerful members of the "D" party predicted all sorts of gloomy repercussions if it should pass.  Well, it did pass, and not so remarkably even 55% of the "D's" voted for it (compared to 71% of the "R's").

Not to be beaten, the "D" elected officials proceeded to mete out punishments immediately in the form of cuts (mostly unnecessary) to services.  The very morning after the vote, the playground next to my apartment building in San Francisco had the gates chained and padlocked.  School budgets were slashed, primarily extracurricular activities including athletics, music, and driver's ed.  By golly, they sure showed them upstart voters!

But it was here to stay.  When Ahnold was elected governor, Warren Buffet dared to suggest that the Proposition be repealed or modified; Ahnold told him that if he ever mentioned that again he was going to have to do 500 sit-ups.  Even the most radical of california politicians usually walk gingerly around the issue, particularly for private residence taxation.  So far.

seems like the efforts are back here - democrat state - mine jumped a good bit last year and again this year , over 30% , not at all sure where that money is going but im one of over 20.000 in this place alone , and this year my state has a multi billion surplus they will spend in the wee hours of the morning = so they are overtaxing us with no-one overseeing it ...................they are not representing our best interest - only theirs

In the past couple of years there have been several City and County elections in Texas that had ballot measures freezing some portion of property taxes for those 65 and over.

AFAIK they have all passed.

The kicker is that we have three kinds of property taxes. City / County, School, and Hospital. The ballot measures don't freeze all three, Usually it is only one.

It always amazes me how the politicians target, the trash man, fire and police. There are soooo many other non essential things that could be cut. Sort of like how we always hear funding for social security is going to run out but welfare funding is never threatened

We just got power back on, so I can reply now.

When Mom passed, the family beach house came to me.
The trust attorney failed to do his job, and properly file some Form 58 (?) for the Parent-To-Child property transfer.
This resulted in San Diego jacking my property taxes up to $16,600 yearly, and sending me a bill for $24,000 in back taxes, due in 60 days, plus the new tax bill.

I had to cover this huge bill, or lose the property.
My (new) attorney told me this is standard operating procedure in San Diego, to force the sale of inherited properties at full market price and full tax assessment to bypass Prop 13 protections.

After covering the tax bill, it took me TWO YEARS at $16,600 per year, to restore my tax rate and get my money refunded.
San Diego had interest free use of my money for all this time.

The voters have since rescinded the parent-to-child protections, which means our 3rd generation family treasure must be sold upon my death.
