Building a Mobile Cooker ~ Suggestion Sought

Recommended Posts

So, Sassparilla Kid had a few days off for the holidays, and decided to build himself a combination smoker/grill.

He started with a 300+ gallon condemned propane butane tank for the smoker.  This will be on one side of the trailer body; the other side will have a Santa Maria type grill.  The grill started life as a 5' X 10' 1/4" sheet of steel; he bent the sides up to form a 3' X 8' X 1' deep box.

The Kid next fabricated a trailer bed with two axles, one with electric brakes.

Still a work in process, but coming along - inaugural use is scheduled for February 04, Hank's grandaughter's first birthday party.  Plan is to haul it out to the ranch and roast a pig on the Santa Maria side.

So here's the question:  Motor for a rotisserie on the Santa Maria side.  Any suggestions for something with enough torque to turn a pig or two (or other large hunk o' meat) at low rpm's?     Pig Jumping GIF - Pig Jumping - Discover & Share GIFs | Jumping gif, Cute gif, Pig gif

Thankee!   ^_^

You will probably need a motor with a gear ruduction. Doesn't really take a lot of horsepower then

I gotta know where you got the jumping piggie and how you imported it here. :)

Oh yeah, the grill. That’s cool too. ;)

Look on Craigslist or marketplace for a free treadmill

Usually 1 hp 2 wire electric motor. Can be used to make wind generator so can be dc powered

Rpm is dependent in power in so you'd likely need the guts from the control board

Tread mill motors generate a lot of torque and are designed to run slow.  You'll need the controller to operate it though.

You can help it last a long long time by adding a simple gear reduction box. Two pulleys and a v-belt or a couple of sprockets and a chain will reduce the speed nicely and allow the motor to be mounted away from the heat of the cooker.

I have a thought, but nothing to do with motors. If this unit uses charcoal do you have a way to cool the embers before taking it down the road?

I ask for two reasons.

1. So no fires erupt behind you.

2. More importantly, so no motorcyclists gets hit with little burning flakes that hurt like a sonofa….?

Guess how I know about #2. ;)

Also, should a motorcycle follow you home due to the smell of your trailer take pity on him or her or them and give them a sammich or something made from the day’s grilling. :D

Update, as of Saturday evenin':

The first model rotisserie motor @JD Lud posted up above seems to have caught the lad's eye.  Plan was to call up Makermotor on Monday and order one.  May or may not get to it...

He'd intended to spend today working on the project - still lots to do - but Mother Nature and the State of california had other ideas (highway flooding in the Bay Area).  Long story short,  duty and responsibility intervened after a few welds and he had to set it aside; seems folks up North are needing pumps.

Beginning of the firebox:

How the day ended up ~ the first of a bunch o' pumps

to be moved a few hundred miles over the next few days:
