Southeast Open Magnificent Seven

Captain Bill Burt

Recommended Posts

Up next is the Bushwhack in South Carolina.  There are 30 Magnificent 7 competitors signed up for the Bushwhack.  The last I checked registration was closed with 157 of 160 shooters.  But if you're interested and you ask real nice Stew might let you in.

That's followed by the Shootout in the Hills in Kentucky.  I'm not sure if they're full yet, but I bet they're getting close.

Then it gets really busy with the remaining four Magnificent state matches occurring over the next five weeks.

I think from here on out every match will have some really interesting matchups and some pivotal outcomes.

We currently have a three way tie for first place. One of those competitors, @Copperhead Joe, SASS # 39162, will be at Alabama.  Will he be the top ranked Mag 7 competitor taking the lead from Fast Eddie and @Santa Fe River Stan,36999L, or will another Competitor notch a first place finish?  Perhaps Hurricane Charlie, Bogus Jim, @vidette, @big country, maybe Iron Cowboy or Purly or @Ringer?

Alabama State will be the biggest showing between the Duelists and also the Outlaws, both of which are showing up in force.  Will Bo Dacious take it all, or will it be @Tennessee Tombstone, maybe Whiskey Creek Johnson?

Then it's on to Georgia State where there will be at least 48 Mag 7 competitors.

Alabama State was a great match!!  We have yet another 1st place Magnificent 7 winner, Iron Cowboy.

With four matches in the books I'm ranking on best two matches.  Shooters who have only shot one match are still in the running, but wont show up in this ranking.

1. Iron Cowboy 1,3

1. Copperhead Joe 1,3

1. Arcadia Outlaw 2,2

4. Pickett 3,4

4. Hurricane Charlie 2,5

6. Bogus Jim 4,4

7. Midwest Hale 3,6

8. Bo Dacious 6,8

8. Shelleen 6, 8

8. Big Country 5,9

11. Captain Bill Burt 4,11

12. Yohan 7, 9

13. Runs with Scissors 11,6

14. Badlands Bob 9, 10

15. Max Payne 9, 14

16. Krazy Kajun 11, 15

17. Preacherman 13,14

18. Tennessee Tombstone 8,19

19. Trail Bandit 13,15

20. Ophelia Payne 16,17

I'm pretty sure these are right, but I'll double check again later today.  If anyone wants to know their ranking just send me a PM.

We have a three way tie for first between Iron Cowboy, Copperhead Joe and Arcadia Outlaw.  Santa Fe River Stan and Fast Eddie also have one rank point each, but only one match each so far.

All five of these Cowboys will be at Georgia State in two weeks.  If Iron Cowboy, or Copperhead Joe takes first place they'll be hard to beat with two first place finishes and only two matches left.  If Arcadia, Stan or Eddie takes it, it's anyone's to win.

The race for the overall looks like this.

1. Hurricane Charlie 3

2. Copperhead Joe 4

2. Iron Cowboy 4

2. Arcadia Outlaw 4

5. Santa Fe River Stan 5 (will not be able to shoot 3 matches)

6. Fast Eddie 6

7.  Pickett, and Groundhog both have 7.

We have two matches to go.  Up next weekend is Mississippi State, then the following weekend Tennessee State.

All of the above competitors are going to TN State, but to my knowledge, none of them are signed up for Mississippi State.

Will someone slip over to MS State and try to sneak in a #1 ranking?  I know Iron Cowboy wants me to let him do that, but I haven't decided.

This Magnificent 7 idea was pure genius.  I can personally say that I was prompted to add two state matches to our travels this year.  I still didn't get to all 7 matches but I will shoot 6 of them.   It's a great way to promote matches in the Southeast.  I hope CBB will consider doing this again next year.

Capt Burt,

Im a little confused on the rankings.  Fast Eddie shoots in the Elder Statesman catagory yet you have him listed as a Silver Senior?

Hi RWS.  We do not have the full range of age categories.  We have:

Junior - under 17, male and female.

Cowboy - 17 through 65

Silver Senior - 66 through 74

Cattle Baron - 75 and up.

Although Eddie is old enough to shoot Elder Statesman in SASS matches (hard to believe isn't it) for Mag 7 he fits into Silver Senior.

Just an FYI, no one will win two buckles.  The overall winners will be removed from their categories and will win the overall male and female, but the category win will go to the next shooter. Thirteen buckles, thirteen winners.

Thank you Bob.  I'm glad you're enjoying it and I hope it has spurred attendance.  Those were my only two objectives, more fun, more shooting.

Assuming the State matches are willing to sponsor again, I intend to run this next year using the same rules.  I'm planning on at least 50 competitors (we have 60 this year).  It will still be best three matches out of the Magnificent 7 State matches in the Southeast.  We'll cap the categories at 11 with an overall man and overall woman winner for a total of Lucky 13 buckle winners (same as this year).  The age categories will remain the same (Junior, Cowboy, Silver Senior, Cattle Baron).  I'll honor categories on a first category with four people signed up basis.  Sign up is open whenever you want.  You can even use the 2023 sign up sheet until I can create a 2024 sheet.

If North Carolina wants to shoot in the spring and join us (I doubt this competition will spur anyone to move their match dates, but I guess anything is possible) we'll rebrand as the Dead Man's Hand (Aces and Eights) or something like that to account for having 8 state matches.

Feedback, both positive and negative, is welcome.  This is a one man operation, so I don't have all the answers, nor do I come up with perfect ideas, just learning as I go.

Smokin Guns at Rabbit Ridge should be wrapping up soon.  One of the Magnificent 7 competitors is going to send me pictures of the scores.  Once I have those I'll make a post for each category listing best two matches and best three matches (when applicable) for each category.

Some shooters have either shot three and aren't coming to TN State, or won't be able to get three matches in and thus get a DNF.

DNF

Tennessee Williams,

Santa Fe River Stan,

Mister Badly,

Iron Maiden,

Slow Jen*,

Purly,

Pecos Pete.

Have three matches already completed and aren't going to TN State.

Hurricane Charly* Cowboy 8 RP,

Bo Dacious Outlaw 24 RP,

Goliath Duelist 85 RP,

Runs With Scissors Silver Senior 34 RP,

3 clean matches already.

I knew I should have gone to Mississippi and kept an eye on Preacherman.  Looks like he shot pretty well.  Must be that new fancy camper.
