Recoil Pad Jig

Col Del Rio

Recommended Posts

I have a Brownells jig.   But still like to grind and fit pads directly mounted on stock.  That FORCES me to go slow and three layers of masking tape gives me protection from minor nicks.  I get real nice profile continuity (between lines of stock and lines of the pad) that is tough to hold on most jigs.

good luck, GJ

I like this one the best out of the ones I’ve tried . https://www.brownells.com/gunsmith-tools-supplies/shotgun-tools/recoil-pad-tools/b-r-recoil-pad-fitting-jig-prod44670.aspx

When using a jig many times you can’t set it up to get the proper angle for the heel and the toe at the same time so you will have to grind one, reset the jig then grind the other

I have a different jig from Brownells that is simpler/cheaper, and find that cheaper one hard to get accurate lines with.

Nice tip on how you re-set angles, BB.

good luck, GJ

When you scribe your line to grind to fill in the scribed line with a white or yellow crayon/grease pencil. It makes it much easier to see. Also if you sand the base of the pad flat “which they never are” it will make life much easier with a jig.

This is the jig I use (might be the same as GJ):

I also sand the back flat, use a fine silver sharpie for my scribe line, and freeze my pad be for grinding.

Freezing the soft kick-eeze pad seems to make them grind with a nicer finish. (Learned it from a gunsmithing video).
