Ambrose write in a great, plain, straightforward style that is easy to read. Not like reading a novel. Also try Nothing Like It In The World, his book about construction of the transcontinental railroad.

Got that one. I think Sargent John Ordway published his notes first.
Itchy Trigger
Ambrose Is good but By far the best book I have read is George Drouillard: Hunter and Interpreter for Lewis and Clark and Fur Trader, 1807-1810

Red Gauntlet , SASS 60619
I add my recommendation for Ambrose's book. After it, then you can dig deeper into original sources and journals if so inclined.
Hardpan Curmudgeon SASS #8967
A bit different but an excellent read is the historically accurate novel, Long Knife, by James Alexander Thom. Originally published in 1979, the book is an accounting of George Rogers Clark's life; George had a life that was perhaps even more fascinating than his better-known younger brother, William, partner of Meriwether Lewis. Long Knife at Amazon Excerpt (first 288 pages of 500)
