I remember when I was a small boy, being out at the Air Force Base, and in the parking lot I noticed a reserved parking space that had a picture of a bird painted on it.

I asked Daddy, and he told me that that was a chicken, and it meant that space was reserved for the head cook.

The common nicknames were and maybe still are

Light Colonel for Lieutenant Colonel

Bird (sometimes chicken) Colonel for Colonel

We sometimes referred to a Lieutenant Colonel as a Half Colonel and a Colonel as a Full Colonel.

Henry Blake was a Light(Lieutenant) Colonel, silver oak leaf not an eagle.
