I like how he started the article with a quote from True Grit, and had both Ned Pepper and Rooster Cogburn saying the wrong things.

The misidentification of the gun was just icing on the cake.

One would think that the editors at American Handgunner would know better.

Based on the info below In the movie The Big Trail, JW did carry a nickel plated New Model Army cartridge conversion.

What's even sadder is the picture later in that writeup is still incorrect. It was not a 44 caliber conversion but a 38 S&W. Additionally the New Model Army pictured is not the one the Duke used. The one used in the movie was nickel plated with some engraving on the barrel and a star inlayed into the grip

The complete yet highly inaccurate  American Handgunner write up here

It’s not only the MSM that screws things up.

As a writer, don't lay this on John Taffin. The editor or their assistant often gets the captions wrong. I pointed out to Mike Venturino the other day that the editor had given the credits for his article to another writer! I knew it was MLV's stuff as I recognized his wife's photography style. I submitted two articles at once, one for a SASS primer and the other for Wild Bunch and they mixed the photos up, so only a few made sense.

"As a writer, don't lay this on John Taffin."

I won't lay the caption on him. But this - “I mean to kill you or see you hang in Judge Parker’s court.” “That’s mighty big talk for a one-eyed fat man!”

It ain't real hard to quote a movie, when the movie clip is readily available.

I mean to kill you in one minute Ned, or see you hang in Fort Smith at Judge Parker's convenience. What will it be?

I call that bold talk for a one-eyed fat man.

Okay, I got nothing on that. Still, John Taffin is an icon and in his 80s, so we can cut him some slack.

nobody said you had to be right to put stuff out there , you just need the connections and clout to get it done , often that is aided and abetted by those that would sully the reputations of others - i think this is a case for that ,
