Safe to use IMR4198 data for H4198 powder?

I want to load H4198 (ADI 2207) for .45-70 cartridge with a 500gr RN projectile.

In the Lyman 48th Reloading book the table states to use 28.5gr of IMR4198 for 1088fps.

Is IMR4198 & H4198 powder interchangeable?

No!  Not at all interchangeable. I don’t know the history of how the powders got named that way. It’s caused more than one bad outcome.

^^^^ THIS ^^^^

They are similar but they are not interchangeable.

Found this in Richard Lee's book but it says "bullet" not Lead.

Can you post what each column represents?

Does it also list data for H4198 and a 475 grain bullet?

Would be very appreciative of any help/advice.

Never rely on just one reloading manual.  Buy as many as you like, from as many different sources as you can find.  The differences can be subtle, yet significant.

You could contact the powder distributor directly and ask for a load.  Here is a link: https://hodgdonreloading.com/contact.

What rifle are you shooting that load or loads in?

Sharps

Done a lot of reading, IMR4198 and H4198 are similar enough that at the low end using 28.5 gr of H4198 duplicating a IMR4198 load there won't be an issue.

H4198 is ADI-  AR2207 rebranded.

Look up ADI Load Data on the inter webby thing.

here is a starting point.

Data – Rifle – ADI World Class Powders and Ammunition

ADI Handloaders guide 2013.pdf (ballisticstudies.com)

Note that at the end of the loading manual is a Single Action Section with lead projectile loads for Trapdoor rifles.

Yep thanks, this link you posted -

I found that the other day in my research and the copy and paste from ADI made me feel very comfortable using 28.5 gr of H4198 pushing a 500gr lead pill.

There is a bit of 2207 still around in some of the Gun stores as well.

I think ADI are still making and distr it.

Yes, I bought 3 x 4kg jugs (2 for me and 1 for a mate) a few weeks ago. Seems like lost gun shops have it in stock......wish it was the same for pistol powders :(
