Forty Rod SASS 3935
When I was stationed at Iwakuni, Japan I taught conversational English to a group of Japanese. I was one of four teachers. The class made arrangements to show us Japan on a number of "field trips". Once we went over to the outskirts of Iwakuni to a park near the old Kintai bridge. (Beautiful cherry blossom there later in the year.) We watched these archery events, acrobats, dancer, kabuki plays, and a whole raft of other things for nearly sixteen hours. One of the horseback archers was a man who looked like he had been there since the island was formed. He came out on a huge white horse, both in full battle costume, and made three passes at three sets of targets (9 targets in all) about the size of a coffee cup...at full speed and about 25 yards range he broke all of the cups. The other compeditors didn't even come close. I thought it was hilarious that he signed autographs for a half hour after it was done, just like any modern celebrity.
