Shout out to Mr. Goon. Great to deal with. Awesome customer service and top notch cap gun work.  He takes Ruger Old Army revolvers to the next level. Crisp trigger and smooth hammer pull. This is my second set he has done. I’m very pleased. Do not hesitate to contact him for work on your cap guns.

How long did he have them for? Im interested but hearing 18-20 months is about how long the guns are in his shop ….

I set up a time with him in advance for when he could have the guns based upon my shooting and work schedule. I don’t recall when I made the arrangements. He is one of the very few cap gun specialists out there. Demand is high for one person.

I gather from your tactful non answer that its longer that 20 months?

I also understand from your non answer that time on the wait list is much longer than you can remember…. If so, length of wait time on list is not the question… how long does he have possession of them after you you got the notice to send them in?…. i understand his work is unrivaled but I’m hearing pards being told “im working on them as we speak, they’re going out to you at the end of the week”…. And that was months ago.

I’ll respectfully decline to discuss business affairs between someone that I’ve had a great relationship with and a 3rd party that I’ve had absolutely no part in that contract.  This is not the forum to attack one of the members of our community about their services. I highly recommend the parties of which you have mentioned reach and have a polite and respectful discussion with Mike.  Please do not attempt to hijack this thread. I just wanted to publicly thank Mike for his work and attention to detail when working on my pistols.

It sounds like this guy may be a one man shop. I’ll never get how people expect fast turnaround times out of a 1 man shop with high demand. If he is capable of turning out say one gun a day. I’m not sure how heavily he customizes. That’s only 365 guns a year if he works every day, that’s just all your getting under the best circumstances. And if you want his work, not that of an apprentice you’re just going to have to wait.

Mike is a one one man shop. He is a super nice guy. He does amazing work on all percussion revolvers; arguably the best there is.  He also takes forever, which isn't a problem on it's own. The problem comes in where an estimated finish date is past by months and the client has to call constantly to get any information about the work being performed. That's not exclusive to Mike.

Like I said, I'd send him guns again to be worked on, but I'd make sure I had a reliable set before I signed up for any big matches and wouldn't plan on him being done with mine. Not bashing him, I've told him this on the phone.

My experience with waiting on our cowboy gun gunsmiths to get our stuff back to us has been this: takes a while but durnshur worth the wait.

Unfortunately that’s pretty much sop for a one man shop. And maybe he overestimates how fast he can get them done. One very successful salesman I know has always told me your better to underestimate and over deliver. So I guess the people who want the quality of work that he does will wait.
It’s not easy being a jack of all trades, he’s got to do it all, and it’s amazing the amount of time you can spend just corresponding/talking with customers. And I’m sure he gets sick and occasionally likes to take a vacation.
When I purchased a Chiappa 87 from Lassiter it amazed me the amount of time he spent bs’ing with me on the phone. It was like you were talking to a old friend. But I also don’t know If he has employees to help him out. Every minute on the phone or responding to emails, shipping/receiving is a minute not wrenching on guns. And I’ve known many people who were great at their given trade but a very poor businessman. It’s honestly rare to find someone who’s both.
When I was a gunsmith I know there were many days I spent more time talking to customers, and doing the paperwork to receive and dispose of firearms than I did actually working on guns.
I would also imagine most cowboy gunsmiths do the majority of their business through Brown Santa , so you also have to be your own shipping and receiving department.
