have not been on the river since the 90s but it was a beautiful example of iowa farmland and woods combined with a small waterway that used to have some small rapids , you will enjoy it , i used to live about 50 miles south and slightly west of there now im a couple hours north and farther west

While you are in Decorah...go see the state fish hatchery there. This one is a trout hatchery. Also check out McGregor and Marquette along the river

Rafe - what part of Iowa are you in? We're at Ledges State Park near Boone.

I believe there are 2 or 3 clubs in central Iowa, one near Iowa City, and some near Moline.  Not sure on the rest of the state.

Edit - just googled Decorah. I see it's in northeast Iowa.

Turkeyfoot would probably be the closest Iowa club at 1.5 hr drive away. There might be a closer club in Wisconsin or Minnesota.

You will be in the area. There are two buildings one for men and the other for women.   https://www.riverjunction.com/Old-West-Clothing-and-Accessories_c_7.html   It is worth the stop and may have info on local ranges.

Went by there today,  didn't want to call for an  appointment as we would just be looking around.  Saw the buildings nice little town

Still here. I believe when Sailorville Lake is at extreme flood levels that the lower part of the park is closed. Camping is on the upper part, by the entrance.  Great campgrounds.

thats what i miss , the lower part was always the very best , i think what you call lower now was what i called upper back then , in the day it was a limestone gorge and beautiful beyond anything i could describe in words ,

that piece of road between ames and boone was brand new in the early 70s - had my triumph pegged one afternoon before it was officially open for traffic , but then we dont need to digress that far , both guys that were with me that day are now gone and a lot has happened in the following lifetimes , thanks for bringing it up tho , i enjoyed a lot of time in the ledges state park back then , great memories
