Capt. James H. Callahan
I was thinking Hank Sr. did the definitive version but can't find it. Could be mistook. It was either Jimmie Rodgers or Webb Pierce. I'm leaning toward Webb. JHC

Sedalia Dave
Tim Blake Nelson and The Soggy Bottom Boys did an excellent version. In O Brother Where Art Thou, the producers soon discovered that Cloony couldn't carry a tune in a bucket with a screw top lid so Dan Tyminski did the singing for him. Tim Blake Nelson however can sing and did so in the movie. He paired with Willie Watson for the Ballad of Buster Scruggs.
Sedalia Dave
Trivia from the movie "We hired this guy and he came to set with a golf club and what he would do is he would look around for snakes," Joel explained. "If he saw one he would rope it with the golf club and put it in this bag. I asked him what you called somebody with this profession, and he said, 'An idiot.'" Trailrider #896
Lawd! I think the last time I heard that was about 1956! Don't recall who sang it, just that it was unique!
Rye Miles #13621
First time I heard that was when Smiley Burnette sang it in a Gene Autry episode! Smiley Burnette was a talented musician, songwriter.
