Long Range match sights

What are the rules for sights for long range shooting? Is there a Handbook?  Or is this not a pure SASS event? (There is a lot of stuff on the web, none of it helpful)

Page 29 in the Shooter's Handbook outlines the basic rules and categories. Long range is not a CAS event, per se, but rather a side match shot at major matches. Most clubs will also have a two or three day match once a year with lots of side matches going on.

Thanks!  This helps.   I am trying to figure out what kind of sights (or scope) to mount on a Browning 1885. It does not have an exposed tang.

95% of SASS long range side matches are more like speed rifle matches. Most ranges are 100 to 200 yards. You can stand, offhand, sit, or prone with sticks. Most are won by most hits in the least amount of time. Marbles peep sights, vernier and soule sights, all are tang mounted.

Because they focus on speed and accuracy most shoot smokeless powder. Black powder most often needs the barrel swabbed during shooting.

Don’t think the 1895 is legal as it has a box magazine.

Winchester 1885 is a single shot (HiWall)

winchester 1895 is box magazine lever gun. (Not sass side match legal, but should be!)

both guns designed by J. M. Browning

Good sources are: Lee Shaver; https://stores.leeshavergunsmithing.com/      What I have on my Uberti 1885.

                                    Montana Vintage Arms, https://montanavintagearms.com/

                                    Shiloh Sharps; https://shilohrifle.com/

Buffalo Arms, https://www.buffaloarms.com/      Dave Gullo, great source!

If they don't have what you want, they can tell you where to get it.

This is the Lee Shaver P-H Series front sight and the rear is a Lee Shaver Economy Long Range Soule. I have since added a Hadley Eye Cup.

Give Lee a call, he's a great guy and will treat you right.

The Marlin 1895 is legal in the SASS Rifle Caliber Lever Action Competition.  I shot the 45-70 for a couple of years until I discovered it was a thumper.

I've got MVA sights on an 1895 Marlin and a Chiappa Little Sharps .22, and a Lee Shaver deluxe Soule on a .45-70 Pedersoli Sharps. They all bring home the wood. B)

You are correct, and I agree on all accounts.   There is no reason why the Win 95 should not be legal for the long range side matches.  But it's not.   So we can't use it.   Darn.

Guess I'll just use my Large Frame Lightning.  :)
