Big stars in their day - Wallace Beery, Zasu Pitts, Ford Sterling in Casey at the Bat.  Zasu Pitts was said to be the inspiration for Olive Oil.  Usually plays a zany comic.

I like to watch the very old westerns to see the costumes and gunbelt rigs.  In this short video, the main character is a "sissy".  Goes west to prove himself.

Ken Manyard was the real deal.  Grew up on a ranch in Texas, bacame a rodeo star, wild west performer,  silent movie star,  then talkies.  Had a trick horse named Tarzan. Later in life his status as a star slipped until he led a miserable life until the end.

Gene Autry took care of a lot of his expenses later in life.

Gene Autry's first performance was in a Ken Maynard movie.  It was considered his screen test. And the rest is history.

John Ford epic The Iron Horse.  Lots of now historic tie is. The locomotive engine they pull up the mountain with horses is now in a museum.  Some of the Chinese actually worked on building the rail line and contributed to authenticity of some of the scenes.  Hell on wheels.  Big cast.  Great quality on the restore.

Yakima Canutt was a rodeo star and silent movie star.  Was credited with many stunts. Doubled for John Wayne and Clark Gable.   Was second unit director.  This is just a hard riding, gun fight,  fighting western.  Lots of dust and gun smoke.

Is this weird or what?  Silent movie of Sammy Davis, Jr and his partner/buddy playing cowboys in the Nevada desert in 1957.

This is a John Ford western with Harry Carey but pretty hooky.  Lots of action but story looks just made up as they went along.  Still fun to watch.  Note that Harry Carey doesn't use a gunbelt. Does a lot of fighting with his rifle.

Even horses were stars.  Rex, a stunt horse stared in some 20 movies.  This one with Yakima Canute was full of shotem' up injun fighting.

Mary Pickford was a mega-star back in the day. Here is a short 14 minute drama of a feud in the Kentucky hills.   Harry Carey can be seen on the opposing side.  Note all the long barreled Winchester 92s. Lots of smoke.

Another pretty good "Jack Ford" (John Ford) set in the west but not really a western because it takes place at the present time the movie was made - cars and other items of the day.  Elaborate plot with twists and turns.

1922 Tom Mix "western" although story in contemporary times. Model Ts, biplanes, telephones,  etc. The big deal much of it is shot in the Grand Canyon.  The stunt work was crazy. Real cliff hanger. Not the best quality.

San Francisco 1906 4 days before earthquake and fire.  Remastered and colorized with sounds added!  Remarkable!

My Great Uncle, Milton Sills, was a dashing swashbuckler. My favourites are the Sea Hawk and his Arabian sea films.

Unfortunately, he died.of a.heart attack in.1930.?while.playing.tennis with his daughter.

He only made one talkie, The Barker

Another "Our Gang" short I've never seen.  Most of the kids are unknown to me.  Lots of contraptions and gags.

Odd Our Gang.  First they are playing trench warfare.   Then they invaded a movie studio. Harold Lloyd has an uncredited part.

Really good Harry Langdon movie.  Although he worked well into the "talkies" era,  I like his silent movies best.

In my opinion there would be  great market for silent movies again today.  I mean, really, so many actors and directors and such NEED to be silenced.

The star of this movie is a 1919 Maxwell.  About 1/3 way it crosses unbelievable rough bolders, cross seemingly impossible slopes, over dead fall, ford streams. The hero has to save the damsel that's being held by the bandits.

Wallace Beery made a lot of westerners and action movies. But he made a lot of silent movies too.  I stumbled on the a series if "Sweedie" short comic movies he made around 1914. Some 30 of them.  He dressed as a woman.  It's hard to recognize him at first.  Then the face gives him away.
