Warden Callaway Posted January 11, 2023 Author Posted January 11, 2023 Big stars in their day - Wallace Beery, Zasu Pitts, Ford Sterling in Casey at the Bat. Zasu Pitts was said to be the inspiration for Olive Oil. Usually plays a zany comic. Quote
Warden Callaway Posted January 14, 2023 Author Posted January 14, 2023 I like to watch the very old westerns to see the costumes and gunbelt rigs. In this short video, the main character is a "sissy". Goes west to prove himself. Quote
Warden Callaway Posted January 17, 2023 Author Posted January 17, 2023 Ken Manyard was the real deal. Grew up on a ranch in Texas, bacame a rodeo star, wild west performer, silent movie star, then talkies. Had a trick horse named Tarzan. Later in life his status as a star slipped until he led a miserable life until the end. Quote
Tex Jones, SASS 2263 Posted January 17, 2023 Posted January 17, 2023 Gene Autry took care of a lot of his expenses later in life. Quote

Smokin Gator SASS #29736 Posted January 18, 2023 Posted January 18, 2023 I love the size of the hats in some of those early westerns! Quote
Warden Callaway Posted January 18, 2023 Author Posted January 18, 2023 (edited) John Ford epic The Iron Horse. Lots of now historic tie is. The locomotive engine they pull up the mountain with horses is now in a museum. Some of the Chinese actually worked on building the rail line and contributed to authenticity of some of the scenes. Hell on wheels. Big cast. Great quality on the restore. Edited January 18, 2023 by Warden Callaway 1 Quote
Warden Callaway Posted January 19, 2023 Author Posted January 19, 2023 Yakima Canutt was a rodeo star and silent movie star. Was credited with many stunts. Doubled for John Wayne and Clark Gable. Was second unit director. This is just a hard riding, gun fight, fighting western. Lots of dust and gun smoke. Quote
Warden Callaway Posted January 22, 2023 Author Posted January 22, 2023 Is this weird or what? Silent movie of Sammy Davis, Jr and his partner/buddy playing cowboys in the Nevada desert in 1957. 1 Quote
Warden Callaway Posted January 26, 2023 Author Posted January 26, 2023 This is a John Ford western with Harry Carey but pretty hooky. Lots of action but story looks just made up as they went along. Still fun to watch. Note that Harry Carey doesn't use a gunbelt. Does a lot of fighting with his rifle. Quote
Warden Callaway Posted January 30, 2023 Author Posted January 30, 2023 Even horses were stars. Rex, a stunt horse stared in some 20 movies. This one with Yakima Canute was full of shotem' up injun fighting. Quote
Warden Callaway Posted January 31, 2023 Author Posted January 31, 2023 First Our Gang. I bet that's Rex the horse doing the tricks with the kids. Quote
Warden Callaway Posted February 3, 2023 Author Posted February 3, 2023 William S. Hart drama in good restoration. Great story with moral dilemma. Quote
Rip Snorter Posted February 3, 2023 Posted February 3, 2023 Search his history. He knew and used the details he learned in real life. Quote
Warden Callaway Posted February 9, 2023 Author Posted February 9, 2023 Mary Pickford was a mega-star back in the day. Here is a short 14 minute drama of a feud in the Kentucky hills. Harry Carey can be seen on the opposing side. Note all the long barreled Winchester 92s. Lots of smoke. Quote
Warden Callaway Posted February 10, 2023 Author Posted February 10, 2023 Another pretty good "Jack Ford" (John Ford) set in the west but not really a western because it takes place at the present time the movie was made - cars and other items of the day. Elaborate plot with twists and turns. 1 Quote
Warden Callaway Posted February 20, 2023 Author Posted February 20, 2023 1922 Tom Mix "western" although story in contemporary times. Model Ts, biplanes, telephones, etc. The big deal much of it is shot in the Grand Canyon. The stunt work was crazy. Real cliff hanger. Not the best quality. Quote
Warden Callaway Posted February 27, 2023 Author Posted February 27, 2023 Here is an entertaining movie with Bebe Daniels and William Powell. Got a plot and lots of action. Quote
Warden Callaway Posted March 8, 2023 Author Posted March 8, 2023 San Francisco 1906 4 days before earthquake and fire. Remastered and colorized with sounds added! Remarkable! Quote
Tex Jones, SASS 2263 Posted March 8, 2023 Posted March 8, 2023 "Slow motion" traffic, by people, horse drawn wagons and autos. Still crazy driving there, but a lot faster now. Quote

Warden Callaway Posted May 27, 2023 Author Posted May 27, 2023 Another "Our Gang". This time in a rail yard. Build their own train. Gets loose on the streets. Quote
Warden Callaway Posted June 16, 2023 Author Posted June 16, 2023 Another "Our Gang" short I've never seen. Most of the kids are unknown to me. Lots of contraptions and gags. Quote
Warden Callaway Posted August 19, 2023 Author Posted August 19, 2023 (edited) Odd Our Gang. First they are playing trench warfare. Then they invaded a movie studio. Harold Lloyd has an uncredited part. Edited August 19, 2023 by Warden Callaway Quote
Warden Callaway Posted August 27, 2023 Author Posted August 27, 2023 Really good Harry Langdon movie. Although he worked well into the "talkies" era, I like his silent movies best. Quote
Forty Rod SASS 3935 Posted August 27, 2023 Posted August 27, 2023 In my opinion there would be great market for silent movies again today. I mean, really, so many actors and directors and such NEED to be silenced. 1 1 Quote
Warden Callaway Posted August 28, 2023 Author Posted August 28, 2023 The star of this movie is a 1919 Maxwell. About 1/3 way it crosses unbelievable rough bolders, cross seemingly impossible slopes, over dead fall, ford streams. The hero has to save the damsel that's being held by the bandits. Quote
Warden Callaway Posted September 20, 2023 Author Posted September 20, 2023 (edited) Wallace Beery made a lot of westerners and action movies. But he made a lot of silent movies too. I stumbled on the a series if "Sweedie" short comic movies he made around 1914. Some 30 of them. He dressed as a woman. It's hard to recognize him at first. Then the face gives him away.
