IWB holster , whose is best?

Trigger Mike

Recommended Posts

I keep losing weight.  I'm down to where I was when I got out of the army.  I'm not trying,  but the diabetes med might be the culprit.

Because of that, none of my pants fit.  I added holes in my belt to hold them up.  If I put an even small pistol like a sig 938 my pants eventually start falling.  I tried the 1791 IWB holsters and if I go to the last hole they will stay up.  I want a better quality and more sturdy one.

I tried one of the bass pro soft pocket holsters for an IWB and sweat covered my gun.  Not.good.

I thought of el paso saddlery , but am open to suggestions.   It needs to ward off sweat, be sturdy, allow for drawing if my belt is tight.

The Crossbreed and the Stealthgear Hybrid IWB holsters are by far the most comfortable and concealable holsters I have ever worn. They are not inexpensive, but hold up extremely well. They hold the firearm secure, but still allow for an easy draw. I'm 5'10" @ 180lbs and I can easily conceal a full size Glock or a S&W 686 Revolver in a holster that is so comfortable that you will forget you're carrying a firearm.

I prefer the Stealthgear over the Crossbreed because they took the Crossbreed and made it much better. Not knocking the crossbreed, but SG has a nicer fit and finish, uses IMO better materials, and they fixed the few issues the CB had.

I think you need a better belt, not necesserily a different holster.  a good carry belt, like Aker or Kore will be a game changer

The Kore gun belts are great , if you keep losing weight you can just keep shortening it . I personally love the ratchet belts because you can get a perfect fit

These belts are also great , fully adjustable but not as easily shortened

If you like kydex

hybrid, these are molded to “guard the trigger” unlike some others where the leather backer will collapse after extended use .

There are enough belt and holster makers out there to make your head spin anymore. But it’s great to have all the choices we have today compared to 30 years ago.

It’s as personal of a thing as what kind of pants , shoes and shirt you wear

Well, when your pant’s don’t fit it’s almost impossible for your holster to stay to no matter how many holes you punch in your belt. A belly band Tupelo has been suggested, also a quality ccw gun belt. Or suspenders. Or an ankle holster. I’ve been through this.

get a nice pair of leather suspenders from a SASS quality holster maker. me and Taco Bill both wear them. They will carry the weight of jeans and  holsters and get the weight off your hip. mine are Black hills brand. Irish ☘️ Pat

There is no "best."  There is "best for you" which is the one that feels right and most comfortable to you.  Your favorite is not likely mine, nor vice versa.  For what it is worth (and this advice is worth every penny you paid for it), I like the StealthGear SG-REVOLUTION IWB Standard holster.  But as the others have said, a quality stiff gun belt is a critical and essential component of the system, not merely something nice extra to have.

I mentioned the Kore belts to my wife and she said , "here's an idea,  why don't you buy smaller pants that fit?!" I mentioned that my weight keeps changing. And she said, " at some point it will stop or you you whither away and die so we'll get you a pair as needed".  She's good for me.

I like the Kore belts.

20220725_143504.thumb.jpg.1a179912445c9a580cb76fbef7fa4a98.jpgI spent literally hundreds on at least a dozen different IWB holsters, including  plastics, leather, combinations, Galcos, Crossbreeds, and many others.  I tried just about all of them with and without modifications.

On my 5'9" frame and enlarged belly, all of them either printed obviously, or were so uncomfortable that I didn't wear them when I should have.

Then I tried a $19.95 nylon-elastic-velcro belly-band holster, by Daltech Force.

I LOVE IT!

It is always comfortable, even in our 100+ degree summers.  I can carry my Sig 938, or a full size CZ75B or 1911 in it with several magazines, and never know they are there.  It stays where I put it and does not slide down or ride up.  I can sit, stand, run.  If I could still do summersaults the guns would not slip, fall out or poke at me.

They are a considerably slower drawing holster, if that matters to you.  (I always figured if a fast draw is needed, I'm better off risking a wait for a better moment than trying to be Bob Munden).

The trigger guards, hammers, barrels are mostly covered and contained, so practice is needed for rapid access.  But that is true of most holsters.

I can wear the gun(s) high, under my arm on either side, or across my chest, or I can wear them low over or under my belly.  The holster simply slides around me to any position for comfort and accessibility.

There are a number of belly-band holsters out there.  I recommend you try one before spending a fortune like I did.

The Daltech Force comes in either black or white, with a full 8" wide, 14" long velcro closure strip that fits and adjusts  comfortably however you want to wear it.

got the daltech coming

I'll be interested to hear how you like it.  I've recommended it to a couple of others, and no bad reviews, as yet.   For $20 you can't go too far wrong, and they'll accept it back if you can't wear it or don't like it.  I doubt they've had very many returns.

Trigger Mike. I’m going thru the same problem. I used to be a strapping 225. After several bouts of pancreatitis and now diabetes, then recently covid with pneumonia. I’m down to 146. I refuse to buy new clothes. Did that last year and lost another 2 pant sizes. I have so many holsters that I refuse to buy more. Instead I bought a tighter belt and wear my high rise belt holsters. Summer or winter my shirts are worn out and covers everything, they hang on my like a sheet now. With the tighter belt I don’t notice it. Wearing an IWB is so uncomfortable for me now. Good luck in your search. I’ll be interested. In what you find

If that's your body type, which I get closer to everyday as it's getting more and more difficult to keep training with bad knees and feet, then appendix carry isn't going to be comfortable. Kidney carry is very concealable and comfortable and with the Hybrid holsters from Crossbreed, Stealthgear, and a few others (avoid the Alien Gear, they're garbage) you can even wear tucked shirts. Also Kidney is MUCH faster on the draw than appendix is with person(s) who are over belly challenged. A VERY good OWB that's very concealable and is locking leather is the Urban Carry. With my Glock 43x or my S&W M&P Shield Plus, both with RDS's they are almost as subdued as the IWB and they are very reasonably priced.

I 100% think everyone should also own a belly wrap style holster. Your Daltech is good and another is the Defender. They are great to use to carry when wearing sweat pants or elastic wasted shorts, but are much slower on the draw.

There is no one good holster that does everything.

Clip draw on a 1911 behind my right hip.  Not for everyone, but has worked for me for for decades  Very hard to spot. I am average size and don't carry much extra weight.  Search online, they even have a demo.

Here are pics of my Crossbreed and a Glock 19. Since most Glocks all share the same frame it can ben worn with the 17, 19, 26, 21, 23, 27. etc. Here I am wearing it and have the shirt both tucked and untucked.  I am also wearing with my Ares Gear gun belt. They are very good, heavy duty use, trouser belts.

Food for thought:

First - get a good belt, as it is the foundation for any belt rig.  5.11 makes a variety of great belts, many others do as well.

One that does not rely on a number of holes is better, such as a velcro or ratcheting system, which gives more adjustments.

If a shoulder rig under the shirt can work try these guys:

More classic IWB or OWB leather or Kydex choices abound - there are probably a hundred makers out there.

I find that IWB holsters to be very uncomfortable, slow to draw from and slightly hazardous to reholster.    Especially with striker fired pistols with no manual safety like a Glock.  After years of trial and error, I finally found that a quality kydex paddle holster worked the best for me.  If you need to conceal it, just wear one of those FBI fishing vests.  That way you can synch up the belt as much as you need to and it won't imbed your Glock into your kidney.

i broke down and measured my belt to the newest hole, then bought a pair of pants that matches, surely along with the Kore belt my pants will stay up.  i prefer a paddle when my pants will stay up.  draws better and easier to take off if I go into a place like a hospital etc that you can't carry one in.

your question is flawed , all are best that meet the criteria you set forth in what you will wear , i have a few but seldom wear IWB i cover my OWB holsters

I always wear the same thing during the week.   A pair of cargo pants and untucked button shirt.  Usually heavy canvas shirt, even in summer that I got from cabelas when they had decent clothes before bass pro bought them.   I used my points to get them.   On church days it's a suit.

There is no BEST IWB for anyone, only ones that work well for YOU. I tend to NOT use inexpensive cordura nylon holsters from any maker. I do favor a quality leather holster when possible, a quality made kydex holster is next in line.

I am a big fan of Kramer Horsehide #2 with a Carhartt work belt. I was one was told by a world famous instructor that if you can fold the belt in half vertically it is not rigid enough. Ken Hackathorn was very right.

I only use leather holsters.  I started using Kramer holsters back in the 1980's and have not looked back.  When I first seen an IWB I ordered one and have used them ever since.  My first holster is still in use.  He makes horse hide holsters that wear.  They are worth the price and wait.  His shoulder holster doesn't work for me though.  I use Wal-Mart belts and buy a new one every two years or so.  Red Nickels did a article on gun belts talking about what a good gun belt is and what a money making B.S. gun belts are for the makers.
