Alpo
Wonder if that song could be released these days? "I was raised in a cane break but an old mama lion Can't no high-toned woman make me walk the line" A "high-toned woman" references a quadroon - maybe even an octoroon. Not finding that definition, Alpo; finding instead references to a person with high moral, social or intellectual qualities, or someone who "puts on airs" as if they had such qualities. That was my understanding as well; never heard it used as a racial reference. LL
Smokin Gator SASS #29736
I read that when he recorded 16 tons, the producer asked him what tempo he wanted. Ernie snapped his fingers to demonstrate. The producer liked it and left the finger snapping in the recording.
