Damn thieves...

Recommended Posts

Scammers, hackers...whatever you call them.

So, I notice a .66 cent charge on my card from hubby's card.

I thought, that isn't enough for a stick of gum.

Soooo...called it in to refuse the charge.

Spent about 30 minutes telling an overseas call center dude that the charge was ABSOLUTELY not made.

And fought with him to stop talking over me, allow me to finish answering his question before asking another!

Finally, gives me a conf# that it is being reviewed.

Next thing I know, hubby is trying to use his card for gas. Mind you, he is home, I am at the cabin! Thankfully we have a small account at another bank.

After going into our bank to see what happened...our banker said to be safe, order a new card with new numbers, ect.

Phishing scheme.

Gave me a kudos for catching it so quick.

The charge was made by

Gilman MMG in White Bluff, TN.????

I can not fimd a company or associated anything to that name...

So...be watchfull folks, they lie in wait:angry:

Back when Gander Mountain still issued a credit card, they contacted me to ask if I'd made a one dollar donation to the Red Cross.

In London, England.

Um ... no, sorry, not me.

They froze the account and reissued a card, and explained the scammers and thieves will make a small purchase, often to a charity, to see if the card is still good.

Yup...figured that a .66 cent amount wouldn't be noticed!!! Oh YES, IT WAS!!!

I once had a card that was charged $1 at stamps.com, then 10 then 400. It was someone local to me because the also bought something at a local restaurant. I didn’t pay anything.

Discover called me once to ask if I had bought a $3000 pair of women’s shoes in Las Vegas. I said no it was not my color.

they called me once to ask if I’d bought gas in Charlotte, Harrisburg, and Fitchburg the previous day. I said yes, it’s a three tank trip.

Pretty strange days - I'm told these tiny charges to start are a test to see if they can get away with more, and though my bank catches them, the user needs to follow up.  My bank stopped some charges, cancelled my card and sent me a new one.  Apparently a well known parts company got hacked and that caused my issue.  I go over every item in every month's bill.

My wife is pretty good at finding odd little charges on our accounts. We haven’t had any in a while now.

Yup.

Banker thought I caught it quick...

I check bank statements about every 4 days!!!

Have not had a scam in a few years!

Hope to not see one again.

My wife is good at this. The problem is many of the places I work have the credit card vending machines so I am often making small purchases. I tried to get a bottle of water today for $2. I was going to pay cash but the vending machine wouldn't take cash because they tacked on taxes so it was $2.18. I was thirsty so I used the CC.

A few years ago I was hit with 23 attempted charges in a two day period.  The credit card company shut down the account and contacted me and asked my to call the number on the back of my card.  I was told that it was suspected that I couldn't have run up 23 charges in three states and nines location for a total of over $900.00.  They had caught it after $40.00+ that I never had to pay.  All the rest were short-stopped at the POP.

I verified all my info and had a new card in about ten days.  I've never caught another bad charge on any of my cards.

Three times during my 5 year career with the state, finance would call me on Monday morning and ask me something like, "Did you buy $3800 of Apple products in Copenhagen Denmark, $1200 in Milan Italy, and $750 in Cleveland Ohio over the weekend?"

"Ummm, no."

It was a substantial amount all three times, and always on a weekend.

When you order online and it asks if you want to “save” your CC information for future purchases click NO.  Then when the online company gets hacked they don’t have your CC information!  After all, do you really trust anything Al Bore claims to invented?

Most credit card/bank accounts now have apps you can load to a cell phone. With the app you have some nice options available.

One is getting a text alert immediately when something is charged to the card, telling you who charged it and how much was charged. Thanks to having that alert, I knew immediately when Rock Auto charged my card for over $600. Within five minutes of being charged I had the card cancelled, the charge cancelled, and a new card on the way.

Another option on the app is being able to turn the card on and off, so that no charges can be made on it when you've turned it off. It works, but it's a bit of a problem when you have a card that you use for automatic charges, e.g., an online pharmacy with auto-refills.

I generally check my accounts daily.  Caught a charge from Amazon on Schoolmarm’s debit card last week for a case of motor oil.  We called the nice lady at the bank and she took care of it.  Schoolmarm went over to the bank the next morning and they issued her a new card!

We’ve caught several scam attempts in the last few years and vigilance is the key to protecting your finances!!

I opened a Cabelas Visa card and used it a few times fir gas and small purchases. The points went to purchases at Cabelas only so I stopped using it. They sent me bills every month sayin zero balance. I ignored them until I opened one and it said I owed $2000.00 for energy drinks. The purchase was made in California (I’m in Ohio) I fought with them and finally got them to drop the charge and I then closed the account!

Been there, done that.
Multiple times.

I do a huge amount of parts business with Newegg in Los Angeles.
My VISA card got a charge for a membership at a porn site.
Wells Fargo chased the charge to an IP address assigned to Newegg.

They were unable to chase it down any further.
All they could do is cancel the card, refund the charges and order another card.

And... I have certain critical automated payments set up for this card, so they will always be made, whether I am on the road or in the hospital with a heart attack.
When you get a new card, all these automatic emergency settings are lost, and must be recreated.
Meticulous records are a must... or they will fall through the cracks.

OTOH, I charged several items on my card that included $1,730 for vet surgery and another for a new laptop computer, plus some others.  My credit card company called me on my cell phone to ask if I had, indeed, charged these items.  Of course I verified the purchases.  In addition, before travelling, I contact my card company and tell them where and when I am going.  So, sometimes the card companies will do the right thing.

I just had about five charges made at various grocery stores that I have never heard of.  Bank sent me a notice about possible fraudulent charges and after verifying I had not made the charges cancelled card and sent me a new one.  If the government wanted to do something useful they would hire some cyber commandos and have them track down and terminate with extreme prejudice the scammers.

The travel notification is important and very much a road smoother!

Both my bank debit card and credit card send me a text every single time my cards are used, they even notify me when the wife's cards are used. I even got a phone call from the bank one time instead of a text saying  they suspected fraud. When I do travel I notify  my bank and credit card company that I am traveling

I drove from Indiana to Georgia to see our son, DIL and grandkids and then back to Indiana.  Two motels and several stops for meals and fuel.  Not a word from my Credit Card company.

Rented a car to drive to O’Hara airport.  Flew to London and spent a week visiting daughter and SIL.  Restaurants, travel and site admissions.  Rent another car to drive back home.  Not a word from my Credit Card company.

Sunday after church took the wife to her choice of restaurant in the next county over.  Our children had worked their way through college waiting on tables, time for the old man (me) to pay forward.  I gave a nice tip.  Credit Card company text me of a possible fraud…
