We need the water, but it sure screws things up and my poor little dog spends a lot of time and energy shivering, shaking, and prowling around looking for a place to hide from the noise. Just picked up something called a "Thunder Shirt". It's supposed to help dogs with anxiety especially that caused by loud noises. It produces a calming effect.
