Mustang Gregg
I want to build a dedicated 1885 for side matches that is SASS-legal. I will use a Browning or Winchester Miroku rifle for the receiver, guts and furniture. It will be .30-30 Winchester caliber with an octagon barrel. I have found a decent deal on a .30-06 rifle and also a 7mm Rem Mag rifle. Would either one be a good starter considering the extractor machine work involved? Shilen no longer makes octagon barrels, Which barrel manufacturer do you recommend? Much obliged. Mustang

Now when they will have one in stock is another story.
Griff
The .30-30 will only be legal for long range side matches, not for plainsman, which requires a traditional black powder cartridge. In addition, the 30-30 is not well suited to loading with BP if you were looking to shoot in a long range BP category. The "buffalo single shot" category requires a minimum .375" bore. Clyde Henry #7046
Lots time and money in a rebarrel job. You'll spend $2000 to make a $1200 rifle. Buy a Browning Bpcr in 40-65. It comes with great sights too. And, you can shoot it the same day you buy it.
