DeaconKC
A couple of our members here have cost me several hours in looking at pictures taken in the 1800s on FB. You know who you are and I will get you for pulling me into that rabbit hole! Anyway, it is interesting looking at actual pics from then, and I started noticing the men's hats. I was surprised to see many "fisherman" style caps and how many hats had flat crowns. Not surprising to see that most of the men wearing broadbrimmed hats were involved in outdoor work. And the relative popularity of the bowler in even "hell on wheels" towns.
irish ike, SASS #43615
"Cowboy" hats is a Hollywood anachronism. In reality people wore whatever.
Alpo
Hats? What I found surprising was the sweaters. Even that famous "left-handed gun" picture of Billy the Kid, he's wearing a cardigan. It just doesn't seem right, for a rough tough outlaw to be wearing a sweater.

Just cause you’re an outlaw doesn’t mean you can’t be comfy! And he probably stole it.
