Iron Cross

Recommended Posts

I came across (no pun intended) an old iron cross with no ribbon on it in some stuff that was given to me many years ago.  It is black with polished iron or steel edge and a loop and ring at the top.

One side has a crown withFW (or maybe PW beneath it, a frond from some plant, and the date 1813 at the bottom.

The other side has a crown at the top, a capital W in the middle and the date 1914 at the bottom.  No swastica nor any other Nazi markings anywhere that I can find.  1914 was well before the Nazi era.

What have I got and are there any negative issues with displaying this in public?  I'm thinking of putting on my BP shooting bag with  the 1813 side out.  Then 1915 date is way past the mountain man era.

What say you all?

Are you sure it's 1924 ande not 1914?

Since the Iron Cross was issued over several different periods of German history, it was annotated with the year indicating the era in which it was issued. For example, an Iron Cross from World War I bears the year "1914", while the same decoration from World War II is annotated "1939". The reverse of the 1870, 1914 and 1939 series of Iron Crosses have the year "1813" appearing on the lower arm, symbolizing the year the award was created. The 1813 decoration also has the initials "FW" for King Friedrich Wilhelm III, while the next two have a "W" for the respective kaisers, Wilhelm I and Wilhelm II.

Not a problem with displaying it.  Many of the early ones had a sterling silver edge.

The basic Maltese Cross shape is still used by the Bundeswehr, with modifications.

It is 1914.  Blame wayward fingers for that.

I was 99 44/100% sure of it

BUT

I have to go by what I see.  There could have been some obscure issue of them, or a mistake at the manufacturer, and it really said 1924.

im one that believes deeply that all of these need to be displayed and reflected on , there ins no future in denying history - those that idolize a wrong can deal with the consequences of public opinion , but lying to ourselves and saying it was not so feeds the communist agenda and big brother to those of us pof that age , im not inclined to go there ...not then , not now , not ever ,

my father was in the pacific so my family did not have the adversity to the german mementos that so many brought home -" trophy's"  as you will , the german side of my family forbade me to learn the language - although it might have been an asset to me in later life , my fathers friend brought home a japanese war bride who became my adopted aunt and ill always treasure her ,

my roots after scotland were in arkansas , i still feel the stars and bars to be  HERITAGE NOT HATRED , i support and cherish every statue ever erected to a proud american anywhere in this country , and should it have a cross i offer reverence to that as well ,

these days of thin skin and hurt feelings are making us a weak population , im not proud of that

That, sir, is one of the best things I've read here in quite a while.   :FlagAm:

I don't see any difference between the first and second ones....and there isn't any room for any kind of markings on the suspension ring.

The marking can be very very small. Use a jeweler’s loupe to examinee the medal and d a magnet to determine if it’s steel or silver.
