It really sucks that they now participate on the wire for a couple years then decide to screw one of us.

Thank you again Moderators for all you do to help keep them at bay. It's most appreciated 😊 👍

If this is in reference to a certain event, I'm not yet convinced the member tried to scam. May be a hijacked account or a 3rd party managed to get in the middle. I'm curious enough to look a bit deeper to see If I find something. There are a few breadcrumbs to follow.

I do wish I had access to forum IP address logs and a few other things. They would rapidly rule out a lot of possibilities.

So I have a situation.  I sent a PM to Fatboy Harley saying I would take the ruger bisleys he posted for sale and gave him my phone number in the private message.  He called me, we arranged payment, FFL info etc.  He gave me his address to send the payment to.  I did a reverse address lookup and the name matched the address.   That was this morning.  About an hour ago I get a text message from someone claiming to be him.  He spelled my alias wrong and the wording in the texts was just a little off.  He sent pictures but it was the same pictures posted in the listing.  I requested he write my alias on a piece of paper and take a picture of it under one of the guns.  He said he already had the guns packaged up and at the FFL.  So then I asked him to tell me his real name and that I would call SASS tomorrow and verify if that alias matched the name.  He sent his name so now I guess I will wait til tomorrow to verify unless someone can do it tonight.

Go back to PM and ask Fatboy what his number is. The other number is a scammer. Send that information to a moderator.

In the future, do all business only by PM. If you do need pictures or something like that, do an info exchange by PM , get the info by email or text, and then RETURN to PM to do the business.

That's what I did, I sent a PM to the person who made the post.  In the PM was my phone number.  Someone then called me and sent me texts with his name and address to send payment.  We exchanged texts to get the email address of the FFL holder.  After receiving the text from the second number I texted the first person and told him about the texts.  He immediately called me.  We talked about the guns, shooters in his area, etc.  It all sounded fine.  I tried to call the other person and they wouldn't answer even though we were texting just seconds before.

Your post is not entirely clear. Does the number of the presumed legit person match the number provided by the seller in PM? Only rely on info provided by PM. Chain of evidence.

And even if so, have the seller confirm every piece of info by PM and ONLY by PM.

While this is not 100% sure of a legitimate sale, it is 100% sure the SASS account is making the deal.

And you are 3rd person (second recent) who I was not able to easily find a phone number for. Somebody is digging deep to find contact info. I have a few thoughts as to how this is being done, will not post on here (if I am wrong, I don't want to give the scammers fresh ideas).

For most scam attempts (and successful scams), I have found contact info for the intended victim in under a minute. At this point, the arms race is escalating. I'm going to sleep on this, I may send you a PM in the next couple days.

I requested through pm that the first person contact me through pm with his phone number and he did so and it matches the number I have been talking to all day.  Both people have given me a name, I just need to see which one matches the records that SASS has for the alias.

You need a PM from the seller with the seller's phone number he is calling you from.

You provided your number by PM but have nothing to authenticate the seller's number.

And nothing wrong with contacting SASS to make sure the seller has a legit SASS number, SASS can not verify the seller's phone number. Only the seller can do so and only by PM. Hope this is clear.

I used to work in Internet security. I would use every trick I could think of and then write a report outlining how I fooled people. I do not see anything in your report to authenticate either caller, one of them might be as good or better than I was.

Text and email are fine for additional photos and such but PM is THE ONLY source for accountable information on a deal.

The seller replied by PM with his phone number and it is the same number that was used to contact me the first time.  The only place I put my phone number was in the first PM.

...I even mailed the check, which will have a stop payment

Check with your bank, a stop payment order is generally good for 2 weeks if verbal, 6 months if in writing. Can generally be renewed for an additional 6 months.

But to really be sure it will not come back in the future, you need to change account numbers. Ask your bank.

Check with your bank. Many consider the check dead after six months.

If you don't regularly change your account password, do it now.  Make it something difficult, with uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols.  Write it down so you can find it again.

People are impersonating SASS Members whose accounts they've hacked and posting items in the classified forum.

Everybody, check your profiles and past buy/sell/trade posts to make sure you haven't posted your e-mail addresses, phone numbers, or other contact information.

Don't buy anything with PayPal Friends & Family or other forms of payment that leave you no recourse if a transaction goes sour.

Someone is going to steal your money.

I appreciate the moderators and others sharing information regarding scammers.  This forum is not the only place as I've recently learned about scammers on some auction sites.  Bottom line is to be careful no matter where you're shopping.

There's some Jackwagon scammer using this email: fb6222359@gmail.com and posing as me.  Its not.  I work through PM's for initial contact and provide my email/phone/address through that medium.

Exactly!  When our overly trusting members post their email addresses and phone numbers, anybody, anywhere, can see that.  Armed with that information, they can find out just about anything about someone.

There is someone just scammed someone that sent a message to someone about my guns as me.  They are located out of Grand Rapids Michigan which is no where close to me.   His name is Todd German 225 Commerce Ave W Grand Rapids Michigan.

It has been handled and passed onto the Michigan authorities who are taking it from here.

The address is a church ministry for the homeless.

While his name keeps coming up in scam attempts on this site, I'm open to considering his identity is stolen. Or he sold his identity. Certainly not a nice guy.

Todd German been scamming away for quite some time now! Beware

Scammers try really hard to talk you into sending them your money. I replied that I would take some brass that was for sale and I received an email to proceed with payment to an address different than what was listed on the profile so I replied on the add wanting a PM to verify. I got no more reply from that one but then got a text apparently from someone else from (616)310-1927 wanting shipping info. I told them I wanted a SASS PM to verify it was the actual seller before I would proceed. They told me my SASS page can't receive PM. I told them to reply on the add then, they said I replied to your message on the Wire. I assume they thought I was too stupid to look, so I replied I call B.S. because I just looked and there is no reply.

Be careful they are trying hard!

Watch out for Ben Flemon. The admins seem to have eliminated him before any damage was done.
