Hoss
I picked up some used 44 mag brass. It had not been cleaned. Has a lighter colored band about 1/4” wide right at the rim. Very uniform across the batch. thoughts? The primers did appear to be flat.
Nickel City Dude
What is the head stamp on the brass?
Colorado Coffinmaker
There is a "witness mark" on the brass at that point which indicates the brass is making positive (tight) contact with the with the chamber it was fired in.

Nickel City Dude
R P could stand for Remington Peters. Just a guess.

Marauder SASS #13056
What Colorado said. Probably moderately hot loads. And the extra dirty rim may indicate black powder or a dirty environment.
Rip Snorter
Look at the primer - I don't see hot load indications. Peculiar chambers? Unusually dirty powder? If you clean, inspect and size just be ruthless on discards.
Widder, SASS #59054
It might be the first time..... but I actually agree with Colorado Coffinmaker..... EDIT: sometimes, this 'Witness mark' can be caused by reloading 'resizing' die if it isn't adjusted properly. ..........Widder
Abilene, SASS # 27489
Maybe somebody was not full length resizing, so bottom of case is thicker and seals better so less dirty? Have you put a caliper to the various parts?

Smokin Gator SASS #29736
I have been reloading some new 45 Colt Starline brass and when I run them through the sizer die the brass is marked similar to those. I have the die adjusted to get the case in as far as possible.
Garrison Joe, SASS #60708
Does the dark color wipe off easily with a little bore solvent? The dark area is what is contacted by most sizing dies, so powder fouling would be spread out over the darker section of the case if it was not removed by tumbling or vibratory cleaning before sizing. The "clean" section is prevented from entering the sizing die by the shell holder. good luck, GJ
Jackson Haller
Does the dark area on the shell go all the way around the shell?

Rex M Rugers #6621
O.K. , you picked up this brass somewhere , you didn't shoot it to get it this way ; so why not clean it and load some and shoot it in your sixgun or rifle and see how it comes out. May be nothing wrong with it. Or it may all split and be junk. Good luck , and good shooting, Rex

Just looked odd.
