unloading a wrongly loaded firearm

This weekend, due to Match Director distractions, I accidentally (dumbly) loaded my shorter pistol rounds into my 73 rifle.  What is the correct unloading protocol?

Technically one may not leave the loading table with a loaded gun except when called to the stage, so just carrying it to the ULT appears not to be an option (without T.O. direction. ) But working the action to remove the rounds won't work with short rounds without jambing, AND it  places rounds sequentially in the chamber under a cocked hammer.

So, does unloading require each round to be extracted through the receiver using a tool, or the magazine cap to be removed? and where must it take place?

I would ask to go to the unloading table and then take off the magazine cap.

That seems like the obvious best answer.  But I wanted to see 1) if there is a better option and 2) if there is any penalty for wrongfully unloading at the LT.

Request an RO (LTO or ULTO) for escort to the ULT if there is not room at the LT to clear the rifle (however you decide to do so).

and

2) if there is any penalty for wrongfully unloading at the LT.

NO

I can't remember why, but I had to unload the rifle at a match in Tombstone one time.  I was going to take off the end cap, but Lassiter came by and, instead, pushed in on the loading gate and the rounds in the magazine came right out due to pressure from the spring.  The round on the carrier came out last by cycling the lever.

This works great. Done it many times, I mean once in a while, after forgetting how many I put in, for a 9 round stage :D

Ah Well.  None of the above.  Suggest you simply acquire a Smith Shop Carrier Block (toggle Link rifle??) and shoot them there little short rounds in both

I hold the loading gate down and they usually come back out the way they went in. Don’t need to remove the magazine cap, Jim Bowie at Cowboys and Indians taught me that.

I’ve seen a well know shooter load his rifle, then Jack out all rounds at LT. Multiple times at same match.  I don’t know if he couldn’t count, had a nervous habit or what!

Works better with a '66 type gate that is dished in, but on the '73 I often find the rim catches on the flat front edge of the pushed-in gate and needs a finger to nudge the base of the round(s) outward to clear the gate edge before the mag spring pops it out.

a 38 special cartridge will slide completely out the end of a 45 lever action. I know….Irish Pat

And when you load a mag of 9mm into a 1911 thats chambered in 45 ACP the slide will throw them neatly down the barrel and on to the ground...   Ask ME how I know! :D
