It can be done, but like all material removal operations, doing it evenly and not overdoing it is the hard part. 

 

Rio Grande sells a number of abrasive buffing compounds and waxes that will do the job. 

 

If the matte etching (more likely bead blasting) is deep, some pre-sanding with 220 - 600 grit may be needed.   Do be careful not to round over edges, unless you want to reshape the gun.

Get one of those lead remover cloth and just start on it while watching a couple of good movies.

no and i wont try , ive actually looked for a matching matt SS SAA to go with the one i have , i prefer the satin to the high polish ....but thats just me , each to their own

Built by my Dad and I; we machined the barrel to the octagon, added the triggerguard spur and polished - engraved 40 years ago.

 

Elephant ivory grips - fitted to the frame at that time.
