Irish Pat
anyone ever tried to polish and buff up a flat matt finish like on Smith & Wesson stainless model 66 .357 so it would more like nickel?
Dusty Devil Dale
It can be done, but like all material removal operations, doing it evenly and not overdoing it is the hard part. Rio Grande sells a number of abrasive buffing compounds and waxes that will do the job. If the matte etching (more likely bead blasting) is deep, some pre-sanding with 220 - 600 grit may be needed. Do be careful not to round over edges, unless you want to reshape the gun.

The Original Lumpy Gritz
Wear rubber surgical gloves. The polishing residue dies your skin.

Built by my Dad and I; we machined the barrel to the octagon, added the triggerguard spur and polished - engraved 40 years ago. Elephant ivory grips - fitted to the frame at that time.
