Here in Montana and some other states as well. crosses are planted at the roadside anywhere folks died.  In some cases they are turned into mini shrines by families. Sobering!

US 431 between Phenix City and Eufaula was one of the most dangerous roads in America for decades.

Twisty country 2 lane road that had about 50-60 miles of nothing but pine trees, possums and deer on a major travel route to and from the Redneck Rivera.

Fellow down in Seale- a wide spot in the road about half way- started putting up crosses where there was a fatal wreck and the county kept taking them.  They said it was going to give them a bad reputation.

They'd take them down, or knock them over into the ditch and he'd put them back up.

The state eventually bypassed that section of 2 lane with the most boring section of 4 lane divided highway you've ever seen but it's still safer than the old road come Spring Break season.

Took me a minute to realize this was a portable sign. When I first saw the wheels underneath the sign, I thought there was a cop car hiding behind the speeding billboard.

Then I noticed how close together the two sets of wheels were, and thought, "Dayum, that's a itty bitty cop car. Yugo? Renault?"

Do you suppose that con is an Aussie abbreviation for silicon? If so, then this sign would make sense.

They sealed that driveway with con.

Or maybe it means that they used prison labor to seal the driveway. It was sealed by convicts - con sealed.

I like the signs, but both of them are on the wrong side of the road for use in Oz. And the second one gives distance in miles not kilometers.

I do not believe they are Aussie signs.

we have an almost identical sign on US 69 just south of Houston.

Beauford H. Jester III Unit

and

Carol S. Vance Unit

Ditto on I225 near Aurora, Colorado, where the Denver jail is located.
