I'll admit a certain discomfiture.
Fifteen years of punching that time clock.
The Superintendent told me he was genuinely sorry to see his best operator leaving.
I saved more lives, running a municipal sewage treatment plant, than any physician.

(Insert lengthy lecture about water reuse and how municipal sewage treatment, and municipal drinking water treatment, prevents pandemic waterborne disease)

... but I'm not entirely comfortable.

I've never retired before.

I've no experience to fall back on.

Reckon I'll have to get through it with the Asbestos Method.

... you know ...

... getting by as-best-as I can!

(I know, I know, two million comedians out of work and I've got to come along!)

But ... no ... have not changed my mind yet.

I am, however, keeping my licensures and certifications current.

I believe in parachutes!

Retirement is the best job I ever had. They pay me to stay home!

If they had known how good they would have it they probably would have done it sooner!

Two steps closer to reality today.

Our lab chief came down (he never leaves the sacred bounds of his empirical palace) and said he's leaving for his Pennsylvania vacation.

He wished me much success and happpiness in this new phase of my life.

He made a special trip downhill to do that.

I thanked him gravely and shook his hand.

Second step was when I went into the breakroom and saw the signup sheet on the table.

Headline, in big letters ...

LINN KELLER RETIREMENT COOKOUT.

Every last man on duty signed that sheet and listed what he's bringing!

Yep, no plans for any major changes.

I've been told with advancing age comes wisdom.

Still waiting on mine.

I may be just a little smarter, though ...

... wrote out a lengthy and rambling reply, read it twice and deleted it.

These few lines say it better!  ;):P:D

... and as usual nothing can go according to plan ...

Came down into the basement and found the hot water tank leaking.
It's scheduled for replacement Friday definitely -- the day of my retirement cookout -- or if fortune smiles, tomorrow.

Grr.

I'll lose a day's pay if I have to take Friday off!

Snarl, growl, cuss, kick, boot ...

Pardon me.

I'll not waste time snarling, growling, cussing and kicking, I'll get on with cleanup while I'm snarling, growling, cussing and kicking stuff.

Multitasking, y'understand.

My wife is younger, smarter and better looking than me, not necessarily in that order.

She's also left handed which means she's in her right mind and I'm not.

That didn't come out right.

Anyway ... where was I? ... oh look, a squirrel! -- oh, yes, retirement ...

My wife suggested we can survive cold water for a weekend, reschedule the tank for Monday.

No need to miss my retirement cookout.

I persuaded the tank's water shutoff valve to work, no more leak, emurgent situation is over ... yes, I can last til Monday with no hot water, not a problem!

I should listen to my wife more often!

:P:P:P
