Categories at club matches & Scoring

Do any of your members at small club matches care much about categories and scoring being all lumped together? Ie some categories have an advantage over others.

We've had a little bit of whining over the years with IPSC, being small we lump all together whether shooting Standard, Production, Revolver or Open.

Do you lump all together or score broken up for CAS?

We honor any SASS known category that a shooter signs up for.

Old SASS saying - "Choose your category wisely"

If a shooter wants to compare to someone who shoots a different category - there's scores posted that allow that.

Our monthly match awards consist of lapel pins that were 70 cents each at last purchase.  Not completely trivial cost, but worth seeing a face light up with a first-in-category announcement.

good luck, GJ

We give out a 65 cent poker chip for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.  It's a really nice poker chip.  The shooter paid $15.00 to shoot the match.  We honor all SASS categories and sometimes even creative categories.

Badlands Bob isn't exaggerating - its a really nice poker chip.  I got one when I participated in the Cherokee Cowboy's annual Evil Bob match a few years ago.  I also was awarded a can of peas (I think you can figure that one out)

for monthly matches a lot of the smaller clubs I goto lump it all together and only offer a ribbon for top 3 over all. Those are generally 15 shooters or less. The larger monthly matches tend to hand out ribbons for top 3 in each category plus top 3 overall. I personally dont mind when they only do overall. About the only time I get a top 10 mention is when there's less than 15 shooters anyway lol

I can’t think of anything less important than categories at a monthly match!!

Well, that's my way of thinking (and the majority of our club, but it ain't unanimous) and the way we've always done other 'category' disciplines (and there's been whinin' like mentioned).....CAS is still pretty new to us and wanted to check what other clubs are doing....just incase we're doing the wrong thing.

15 would be a good turnout, 20 would be a great turnout at our small club.

Most of the clubs I shoot monthly matches at now days just announce the category standings and don't actually give out any awards. Some tell the top 3 per stage and top 10 finishers. Some though do have small tokens for clean matches.

Not only do we not worry about categories we allow shooters to pick any category they care to try out on any given stage.  This is the place to experiment, try something new and different and learn...

You're not giving away anything?

You're not giving recognition at the match?

The categories are not equal - some take great effort to shoot in a specific manner or with certain equipment or to utilize a specified propellant.

If your shooters are putting forth this effort then don't insult them or diminish their efforts by lumping everyone together.

I think the bare minimum you can do is to sort the results by category so the shooters can easily compare their results to like competitors.

The evaluation of a match, a club or its officers begins well before the first round goes downrange and continues well after the guns are put away.

I tend to not patronize clubs that don't put in the effort.

No we don't give 'anything away' we might shoot a club match each weekend (sometimes both days).

Small club, bit hollow ie having 6 members turn up for a shoot and I post the scores out to the whole club as 6 first places.

These matches are JUST for our club members. It might be different in the US but here members pay a yearly club fee, they get to use the range 365 days a year and all the facilities (just needs to be two members for safety reasons) at no cost.

If we advertised a shoot and had visitors from other clubs, yes we would categorise and have small awards.

For monthly's or annuals?  We do that for annuals.  Not for monthly's.  The distinction is important.

We don’t give out anything at our monthly matches, that’s all we have. Usually 8 to 15 shooters, we keep scores on a tablet and read them off from high to low at the end of the match. The scores are also posted on Facebook and the website usually within a day or two. We do give a box of Remington STS shells to clean shooters!

The distinction is immaterial.

It's about showing respect to your customers.

An 80 y/o shooting Duelist with full loads of BP deserves better than to be simply listed as 11th out of 12 shooters in a lumped together list.

Im not saying you "have" to give anything away.

Lots of clubs do not do awards for monthlies; but for some shooters, (that may not attend annuals due to cost or scheduling) the monthly is their only match opportunity for recognition.

It is certainly not an overwhelming burden to, at minimum, list the shooters placement by category when distributing scores.

We have between 10-25 shooters at our monthly match, which includes visiting shooters from other clubs who pay an entrance fee. Most of us barely care what place we come or what times we get. It's all about having fun and socialising. We don't need a badge or ribbon or any other prize to confirm if we did well. If you feel you need a prize to feel good about yourself then you're in it for the wrong reason.

All SASS categories are recognized. That being said, I don't pay attention to them as there is only one other shooter I compete against. We just shot our first match of the year Saturday. I'm down one. She was a little rusty, but I was rustier......

The tradition after Illowa Irregulars' matches is to gather on the range and announce all scores first by category, then overall.  We award a poker chip to the winner in each category that has at least two competitors.    A chip also goes to each clean shooter.  After a shooter accumulates five chips, he/she can turn them in for a free match.  As our scoring director reads the results, if a category has just one shooter, he reads the alias as 1st Place, and the assembled group calls out "Nooo Chip!"  If a chip is to be awarded, the category places are called out, and our club president hands (tosses!) the chip to the winner.  We also award a chip to the high overall lady and man.

Our monthly shoots pre-Covid/ammo crunch averaged 45-48 shooters...post-Covid/during the crunch we seem to be holding at around 35.  We are curious to see if these numbers increase slightly in the next couple of months, prior to the SASS Illinois State Match, which we are hosting July 15-17.

Just another question compadres, do you use a tablet or just paper score sheets for your club matches?

Clubs around here do both. My home club uses 3X5 index cards that are pre-printed. We shoot in a self organized order to make it easier for the score keeper. If a person doesn't want to shoot first or last they can insert themselves where ever they want prior to the first stage.

Other clubs I shoot at are using tablets. Some are still clinging  A.C.E.S. Other are using CAS or Practiscore. I am the Match Director for a monthly Cody Dixon match and use Practiscore.

We typically only have 6 to 8 Cody Dixon shooters at a match. I read off the over all scores at the end of hte match and then email out a detailed score sheet once I get home.

My home club honors all possible SASS categories plus any local ones we feel the need to create to accommodate any shooters special needs. We announce the category winners plus the top 10 at the end of the match. If a shooter desires we have ribbons for 1st through 5th place. We do give a Plaque for a person's first clean match. After that we give a little month and year hanger that can be added to the bottom of the plaque for subsequent clean matches.

At Firelands we usually get anywhere from 15-35 shooters.  We list the scores in order of placement and put the category next to their name and score. You can have 20 different categories so it's ridiculous to list them separately.

Where are you all getting these awards............poker chips, lapel pins, etc.

Our club has grown quite a bit in recent years, and I think some type of award might be popular.

Thanks!

I've been ordering from Pokerchiplounge.com for the past 12 years.  They are good to work with and will help you design a custom poker chip.  They have lots of chips to choose from.   I never realized that there were that many choices.   We've got them for the top 3 places and clean shoots.  We use more 1st place than anything else.

We give out clean shooter pins to those that achieve it.  Shooter can sign up for any category, but we only publish the overall list at monthly's but it indicated the shooters category.

None of the regular clubs in Texas that I shoot at give out anything beyond a clean shooter pin at monthly's.

I'd like to see "emojis" for each category.

Locally we post overall and category results. I could care less about category wins, I'm after the overall.

At Thurmont,  for the monthlies, I recognize every legit SASS category plus a “plinker” category for anyone that wants to shoot 22s because of the component shortage.

We give out clean match awards and I started giving out an overall award. Scores are posted on the website in Overall order with category finish.

I’ve not been to any monthly where any awards other than for a clean match are given.

at TRR we honor SASS as well as home-grown categories.

At last count we had 40 of them--see attached sign-in slip

we can get 4 per page on a legal sized page

we don't give awards other than clean match pins.

we use PractiScore but also keep a paper back up--it has come in handy a number of times

Rye just looked up your score results on your club website. I'm thinking that I might copy how you guys post your scores.
