If you got a deep cut....... my folks would also pour salt in the wound.   Not 'ON' it.... but 'IN' it.

Poison Ivy also got a heavy dose of Clorox.   UCK!

..........Widder

Late 80s or early 90s, the stuff came in a squeeze bottle.

I had a terrible case of sinus but didn't have my glasses on.

I thought it was nasal decongestant.

Shoved it up my schnoz and gave it a good blast.

My wife was greatly amused at my ... response ...

Miracle they didn't poison us!

Mine used ammonia on the poison ivy.

Geeze.  At least your parents did something to try to help.  If I came in with a cut I'd get a "don't track blood into the carpet, go clean it out, pour on some alcohol, and get a band-aid if needed. "

Poison Ivy was "wash up real good, and you're gonna itch for a while.  Try not to scratch"

Once upon a time my father-in-law cut his hand and for some stupid reason poured children's liquid Tylenol on the cut.

He said that it healed up real good. He also said that he danced around the room and screamed a lot.

For cat scratches, thorn punctures, and the like it was Black Salve (Iodex).

My Mum had a jar of something she called Black Drawing Ointment that would pull splinters, thorns, pus etc out of wounds, from memory it smelt like tar.

Ichthammol ointment. Been unavailable for years here in the US. Don't know what happened, it just disappeared. I'm a pharmacist and I don't know.

I got my tonsils painted with that Mecurochrome any time I complained about a sore throat.  I hope the stuff wasn't poisonous.

When I first read that I thought it said I GOT MY TOENAILS PAINTED...

Wondered how that could possibly help a sore throat.

My father's go to antiseptic was ST37 for cuts & gargle for sore throat. We also kept a bottle of peroxide with the first aid materials. Don't recall any iodine or mercurochrome.

My Mom used to give me some elixir that tasted and smelled like camphor when I had a sore throat when I was little. No idea what that stuff was. She also had stomach medicine that had opium in it. That stuff knocked me out.
