on the hunt for a "summer cowboy hat"

Hey all,

I was wondering if anyone could identify General Crook's Pith helmet as it doesn't appear to be the M1880 or later versions of US sun helmet.  I suppose I could get one that looks like a 1887 or 1880 model and it would work weather I was dressed as a brit or American Cav, but I like the look of the Crook hat and most military versions I've seen in this style date much later than the 1880's.  Thanks in advance.

Considering the time frame you might have good luck checking Victorian era English Colonial Pith helmets or Sola (Solar?) Topee and other names.  Steam Punk would be another possibility.

most of the british 1800's look like the american 1880 with the colonial pattern as far as I can tell1880-624x391.jpg.d04e6df316152b49fc79086dd92d4c1d.jpg

If an 1897 pump gun is okay I would think a pre-1900 pith helmet would be okay.

I think the only thing a pith helmet would not be legal for is B-Western which requires a "Felt" hat, since these aren't felt I don't even think it would qualify for this

otherwise Gene Hackman's Crook in "Geronimo" would be a fun outfit.

apparently his hat sold out of the prop house for $375 + fees after the movie.

I have never seen another example of that particular style. I suspect he got it from some commercial haberdashery or had it custom made.

Hey @PaleWolf Brunelle, #2495L, does conforming to the hat requirement when doing a look alike mean that there must be a hat, or that the hat must also be felt, because I'd kinda like to know if this outfit would be B-western approved, or just something I'd have to keep in a non-costume category.  I wasn't sure if this phrasing was intended to allow Indian head dresses and the like as long as it was from a movie depiction etc...

His hat is commercially made civilian.  Not a military one at all.
