Col Del Rio
In the Jan 22 issue of American Rifleman, there was an article on Mossberg 590s. In the article, 1 3/4" 12 GA shells were discussed. They work in the Mossberg. My questions are: 1. Are these kind of shells legal for SASS? 2. If so has anyone ever used them in the 1897 Winchester? Thanks, Col. Del Rio

Charlie Harley, #14153
If you’re thinking of using them in your 97, try them first. I could not get them to feed at all due to the shorter length.
Outlaw Gambler
I have used them more than once and they worked fine out of my 1897.
Nickel City Dude
What would the benefit be to using the shorter shells in the 97?

They can be used in Wild Bunch to get six shells in a '97 that is not modified to load six.

Thanks, I don't shoot Wild Bunch so I did not know this, but now I do.
Col Del Rio
Thanks for the inputs. I was thinking of getting some shells for my wife. She is very petite so lighter recoil is better.
Crooked River Pete, SASS 43485
I never used them in a 97, but tried them in my 870 Remington. They fed fine but because of the shorter length did not eject well. We decided the shorter case meant less mass, had to work the action quite hard and fast to get consistent ejection. Where you can get standard length Federal Subsonics at 900fps.

That was the consensus/conclusion arrived at when some folks around these parts tried them about ten years ago.

And they can retain normal shotshell velocity and shot weight at the shorter length because the "cushion" part of the wad is missing.

I dont think there is a huge difference between them and the low recoil shells the short ones are pretty expensive
Frybread Fred
Tried them in my 97 as well as a mossburg 500 and benelli super nova, wouldn't cycle in any of them without fighting them. Not worth the effort. They do work nicely in a double bbl or single shot. Seemed to be less recoil but I could be mis remembering as it was years ago when I last played with them
