The Day the Music Died

Recommended Posts

February 3rd, 1959. A plane crashes in Iowa, killing Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and "The Big Bopper" J.P. Richardson, along with pilot Roger Peterson. Singer Waylon Jennings gave up his seat on the plane to J.P. Richardson, as Richardson was sick. Tommy Allsup lost his seat to Valens based on a coin toss.

Before Buddy Holly became famous, momma's cousin played with the band...they stayed at the house in Waxahachie while playing a gig in Dallas.

Mom thought that was cool.

Terry Noland Church quit the band, because he didn't think it would go anywhere.

Terry Noland had a one hit wonder, Patty Baby.

He ended up in realestate, and lived quite well in Oklahoma.

True story!

I wasn't around in '59 but I've certainly enjoyed all those guys' music since the first time I heard it.

Buddy Holly really belonged to my cousin Kathy's gen (5 years older than me), but then, one day I caught myself singing 'That'll Be The Day' while hanging out laundry.  I was 11 when he died.

Waylon was Buddy Holly’s bass player.

I was six years old when this happened, but I remember hearing about it on the big radio in my grandparents’ house and some of my teenage cousins reacting to the news.
