Hey TN,

have you ever wonder why you're broke and your wife has to run around barefoot?

I think you own more Smiths than Wesson does.

Yeah, I better quit posting them just in case TN Whiskey gets on here and sees them. I ain't told her about the wire so as to keep out the riffraff but you never know.

Pat,

That 17-3 is an eye catcher.     That needs to be shot often and caressed more often..... ;)

The TN Williams 'Dilemma' poem:

TN Williams has many a gun

Some for show, some for fun.

Some are beautiful, some are mighty fine

But he still ain't got a Model 69.

I like those smith 22s. I've got an early 8" 17. Its probably the most accurate revolver I have. I keep a 4" 617 for just walking around the woods and a 617 I built for steel challenge that's still over in East TN cause I'm too lazy to go get it. I'd like to come across another one of those snubbies. I sold my last one and regret it.

Yet!

The picture of a pistol that TN can't show is the one I have in my safe that belongs to him.

Its a model 617, custom set up with a Douglas barrel and FINELY tuned.   Barrel-Cylinder gap

is set at .002 for each chamber and the barrel has been squared with proper forcing cone,

compliments of Curly Bill Kelly.

Definitely a nice rimfire pistol.

And then I have my 6". 617 that I got in a trade from TN.   Nice, real nice!

This thread reminded me of a S&W gun I had forgotten about.  Went and dug it out of the safe.  This is the civilian version of the Air Force Model 13 survival revolver.  Aluminum frame and cylinder.  Most were destroyed or blew up.  These are now very rare.  This one has the old style flat cylinder release button.  Probably made in 1952.  Not safe to shoot even with the ultra light .38 Special ammo the Air Force issued with the guns.  The anodizing wears off of these very easily so this one is actually in pretty good shape.

Here is another one I had forgotten about.  S&W Model 53 in .22 Jet with a period correct old Bushnell Phantom scope.  Luckily several years ago I bought 1000 new Jet cases before they stopped making them so I have ammo.

Hey Larsen.   I remember that one.   I almost bought one back in the 70's, if I remember correctly.

Wasn't that S&W answer to Rugers .256?    Didn't Ruger name it the Hawkeye, or something like that.

I bought my model 17 because I remember how much I loved shooting my Dad’s when I was in high school. He had a K22 with the 8 3/8” barrel. I would tape pennies to to a board and shoot them at 40-50’.
A couple of years after he died my Mom asked me if there were any of Dad’s guns that I wanted. I told her I wanted the .22 revolver that I shot all of the time. She sent me his old High Standard Sentinel Mk IV .22 magnum. I was so bummed. One of my Dad’s (butt)hole buddies talked her into giving him the K22.

That’s okay. My sister had the High Standard now. I have a cool .22 and some good memories. That’s all that really matters. ;)

Someday I may have a model 17 with an 8 3/8” barrel.

The Jet came out in 1961.  The Ruger Hawkeye in 1963.  The Ruger only lasted two years.  The Jet lasted about ten.  The Ruger was a single shot.  The big problem with the Jet in a revolver is the chambers and rounds had to be clean and dry.  Otherwise the bottlenecked round in a revolver would set back and jam.

My favorite 69 included my High School graduation, free trip around the world (compliments of the U.S. Navy)

and a car I didn't get until a few years later:   69 CUDA.

And poor TN Williams still ain't got a Model 69.

That model 69 is on my need list....here is what I currently enjoy shooting and carrying about in the woods....5 shot .44 special L frame model 696.  I bought this new about 24 years ago and I believe it was less that $500.00 back then.  It is a quality shooter...

@Dantankerous any luck yet?

No... slow going here. Working too much to "go shopping".

But... I still cannot decide on barrel length. The 4.25" does give a bit better sight picture but I already have other 4" 44s. A 2.75" might just be the cat's meow.

  • 3 weeks later...

As an avid S&W wheel gun fan I own two of the M69's in the short barrel and the 4" and carry them primarily while in the woods.  Great with bird shot for snakes and full loads for other critters.  Although I tend to carry factory defense .44 Special rounds in most situations.

The "L" Frame is nice and low profile for carry when bulk/weight is a factor

I finally found my Redhawk 44 mag in S. Carolina
A very clean 1996 vintage KRH445 from Gun Broker.
Had to pony up for it... but I figure they don't make the one piece barrel any more, so they are getting more rare by the day.

Now I have to endure the CA FFL, Background check, waiting period process.
I figure it will be 30 to 45 days before I take possession.

I must truly be getting old and decrepted.  I stopped by a local LGS this morning and they had two display cases full of S&Ws.  The had a Model 69 and well as several different barrel lengths of the 629.  I really like the 69 but then I thought to myself "self, what are you going to do with it?"  I didn't buy anything.

What are you gonna do with it? Post pictures of it here and make Tennessee Williams jealous. :D

Cool! :D

That’s a fine looking revolver. Thanks J-Bar. :)
The grips that came on mine look almost like the ones on yours. I changed mine out but still have the originals.
