Garrison Joe, SASS #60708
Have used it with good results in .45 Colt. Burns better with above mid-range powder weights from Hodgdon's on-line data, which makes kinda fast loads. good luck, GJ
Hashknife Cowboy
I have used it quite a bit with 205 gr moly coated bullets. Never a problem. It is very clean and I used it in full loads for the SAA .45 Colt.
Turkey Flats Jack
My dad uses it and I used to. Light loads are kinda dirty imo but it works just fine from my personal experience. I've since changed to wst for all my smokeless loads. Seems to burn cleaner but 231 performed just fine for me.
Choctaw Jack
I've used W231 in .45 Colt for over 10 years. No problems in many thousand rounds. FWIW, HP38 is the same powder. Choctaw
Broke N West
Over fifteen years with 231 in 45 colt. 200 gr RNFP, with the load at just below the handbook minimum. Measurable crimp. No primer movement, so a stout enough recipe to keep the primers seated. Yes, dirty results on the outside of the case in Colt 1873 diameter chambers, but can live with it. One issue is cold weather. Don’t know if this is peculiar to 231, but when it gets down towards 32 deg (Michigan and Ohio early and late shoots in the calendar) the burn can be erratic. Not to the point of squibs, but definitely has that audible delay between bang and clang.
Major Hazzard, SASS #23254
Unique, 700X, W231 (in that order) are my favorites with cast bullets. Can't go wrong with any of them, given you know what you're doing of course.
Roscoe Regulator
Be sure to check Hodgdon's website data. They now sell powder direct from the reloading center, and HP-38 indicates in stock.https://www.hodgdonreloading.com/
Boothill Bandit, SASS# 48598
Don't forget that Green Dot works well too. A little dirty, but that's why God invented tumblers for.
Tye Riverman, SASS #41433
Yep, use 231 or HP38 in just about all of my handgun loads. BTW, they are the same. Works fine in 45 colt. Load 160,200, and 250s. Tye
