Match Fee Question

Recommended Posts

I am doing a little research on the fees charged for matches.

Typically, our club level, monthly matches are 5 stages. Three stage set-ups and two stages with different sweeps etc.

We provide a match booklet, bottled water only, no meal, at a certified range with flush toilets and running water a short walk away from our dedicated CAS range at the Square Circle Wranglers facility ; www.squarecirclewranglers.ca

We currently charge $20.00 Cdn for a match fee, to help fund maintenance of buildings, replace target shrouding, (a Provincial requirement) etc.

What do others, charge for their matches?

What is your average attendance?

At the Escondido Bandidos they charge $10.00 for members of the local fish and game club and everyone else pays $15.00 and we shoot six stages, 3 scenarios on 2 stages set up. There is iced bottled water furnished and a close porta potty near by and real toilets and running water a short walk away. They have a nice clubhouse with kitchen facilities and a nice bbq setup for our occasional after match meals. I’m not real sure on the match fee structure at other matches that I attend down here so I’ll leave it up to someone else to fill in the blanks.

We charge $10 and usually shoot 5 stages but sometimes the weather makes us cut it short.  We do not charge extra for non club members.  We do not provide water or food.   But when we are done we go to the club house and drinks and food are available there for purchase.

I shoot at 4 different clubs. All charge $15 for members and $20 for non-members. Annual membership is 30-40 dollars. All the clubs shoot 6 stages.

One club provides a meal at this price.

All the clubs furnish bottled water free of charge.

Not to derail you thread Cold Lake Kid, but what material do you use to shroud your metal targets?

The Province of Ontario CFO mandated all steel targets must be shrouded. We use plywood and used transmission belting  screwed to the plywood, to absorb some of the lead splatter and keep the wood from being chewed up.

You can see the steel hanging frames for the targets and the wood shrouding. That black on the inside of the shrouding frame is transmission belting cut and screwed to the plywood. That saves a lot of wood replacement time and money once the belting is in place.

The one lying on the ground was after a windstorm overnight but shows a larger frame for multiple target to hang from.

Thanks Cold Lake Kid, super appreciated. We are under the same requirement to contain skywards and port and starboard lead splatter and planning on using plywood and your pictures were great.
Our Range User Guide doesn't allow for using old tyres on any range because of the inner steel belts (we can't fight it, we just have put up with the rule) but we can use conveyer belting.

Thanks again for going to the trouble of posting the photos!

Most of the clubs around me you need to be a paid annual member, then every shoot/match/practice is free being included in your annual membership.

My club is $320.00 per year, you get a key to open up the whole range complex and can shoot 7 days a week 365 days a year if you wanted to.

For visitors shooting a match at our club (and all the clubs close to me) the sign on the ranges states a $30.00 visitor fee. Though usually this ends up getting reduced to sometimes a gold coin donation ($1 - $2). If a 'visitor' is there all the time, then they are expected to join the club or start paying the visitors fee.

We charge $18.  This includes lunch.  5 stages.  Porta john on -site, but clubhouse is available a short distance away.  When under COVID restrictions, we do not serve lunch and reduce the fee to $15.  This is for club members and nonmembers like.  Those aged 16 and under are $5.

Our State Association fee and SASS Club membership fees come directly from shooter fees.

Same in central Texas, except the largest club is 5 stages, and others sometimes drop to 5 in the summer.  20 years ago they were all $10/15 but one at a time went up $5.

Our club operates in the same price range, except we typically shoot a five-stage match on both Saturday and Sunday (10 total stages).   The $15 (member) or $20  (non-member)  fee is charged separately for each day's match.    Our annual membership is $20.

We generally shoot 5 stages in 5 different bays on each day, usually re-using the same target arrays on Saturday and Sunday, but with different stage designs.  Our club has 9 CAS-dedicated bays, each with its own permanent  western town props.  We try to use different bays each month.  We have porta-potties convenient to the shooting and plumbed restrooms at our host range, just a few yards away.  We provide water, ice and occasional pot-luck food during seasons when weather is amenable.

Our average attendance varies widely with season, weather, and recently member COVID concerns.  Our winter temps go below freezing and summer temps  often exceed 105 and sometimes even 110 F.

We usually see about 15- 20 shooters on Saturday and up to 35 or so on Sundays.

Fees are $8 for members, $10 for non-members. Annual fee is $55 individual which gets you a gate code to access the range from sunup to sundown 365 days.

Shoot 6 stages on three bays on the third sunday, used to be both saturday and sunday but between lack of components and covid bs cut it back. November, December and January another club holds their matches on the second saturday as their range gets pretty muddy and the drive can become a bit of a pain in bad weather.

We have 7 bays, six have permanent facades and one open bay for that can be used for shoot offs or all kd stages. Porta pottie at one end, clubhouse with wood burning stove for warmth if needed, outdoor carport for shade in the summer.

We usually get 14-16 per match sometimes 20-21.

We shoot at two different clubs. One club is $10 for everyone. At the other, buckaroos shoot free. No meals, water available and good restroom facilities at legit shooting clubs.  We get 20-30 shooters in good weather and 15-20 in not-so-good weather, on average.  We shoot 6 stages at each club.

Shoot at 2 different clubs, both have permanent stages and port-a-potty on the range.  One shoots 5 stages twice a month the other 5 stages once a month, both clubs have a 5th Saturday match if there’s an extra Saturday that month.  Both are $15/non member, 10/member, water is provided for free.  One club is a stand alone, the other is part of a Skeet and Trap club, but you don’t have to be a member of the Skeet and Trap club to shoot CAS

So, how much is that in American?   (Just kidding!)

I think you will find that there are a lot of factors that contribute to the match fee.  Is the club part of a larger organization that shares insurance costs, range maintenance, target costs, etc?  Does the club host an annual event that brings in a significant portion of the annual income for the club?  What are clubs in the area charging for their match fees?  Is lunch included in the match fee?

All of those come into play when determining what to charge.  I think everyone understands that it costs money to run one of these clubs, and that their match fees offset that cost.  If you have 50 people showing up every month paying $10.00 per match, that's $500.00 per match.  Figure 8 matches per year, that's $4,000.00 per year.  That will cover a lot of costs, but possibly not all.

Our club, which was started 25 years ago during the heyday of SASS, used to get 80 folks per monthly match and sell out our annual at 160 shooters every year.  Monthly match fees of $5.00 for members and $10.00 for non-members, plus the net proceeds from the annual match (which also had substantial costs), bought and paid for our targets, timers, props, storage conex boxes, and earned a lot of good will at the Host club (a 501(c)3 Conservation Organization), which receives all of the proceeds of the Cowboy matches.

Although we have retained the $5.00/$10.00 match fee structure, with attendance down to about 30 at a monthly match and 60 - 80 at the annual, we would be hard pressed to make the club viable if we didn't already have the infrastructure in place to support it.  Targets costs are up, as is everything else, and building our inventory of supplies and materials would not be possible at that level of participation.

In the big scheme of things, the match fee has to be sufficient for the club to survive and grow or it won't survive.  It's a balancing act between what you need and what you can charge.  With ammo costs being what they are, a typical monthly match of 6 stages will take 60 rifle, 60 pistol, and 24 shotgun rounds.  That's between $20.00 and $40.00 in ammo, depending what you had to pay for your primers and components.  Add that to the match fee, and assuming that you had all of the other gear, that's $30.00 to $50.00 for a match, and that doesn't consider travel costs.

Still cheaper than golf (and they think WE dress funny! :P), but not throw away money for sure.

Possibly consider hosting a "Fund Raising Match" where you charge a little extra with the money dedicated to props and materials, or put a Donation Boot at the registration desk for people to contribute a few bucks into the pot.  That way, those who can might contribute, and those that can't won't be chased away from the match due to the fees.

Best of luck with your decision.

My club we charge $20 and $15 for members, we shoot 6 individual stages, bottled water and lunch included. During hot summer months I’ll usually throw a couple of 12 packs of gatorade in the cooler as well . Some months i may have as much as $9 each invested in the lunchs, depending on what we have. Were not getting rich by any means. Avg attendance is between 30-40 shooters

Before the plague hit we averaged 25 shooters for each shoot. At $15/match it covered rent, insurance, port a john, etc so we broke even.

Now we are averaging 13 as attendance is way down since summer of 2020.  Fortunately we have managed our money and our annual shoot still lets us break even.

Thanks.

Our target stands at Square Circle Wranglers are now square steel tubing.

The "T" base vertical pieces are slightly larger than the vertical uprights holding the rest of the frame.

The frame verticals slip into the vertical portion of the base.

The top horizontal steel tube, welded to the vertical tubing legs, has eye bolts drilled and screwed through it.

The targets are hung using "S" hooks attached to cut strips of transmission belting, which are bolted through the steel targets and the wood and transmission belt shrouding is bolted to that top tube.

The Trail Boss West, Red Storm, Regulator, usually makes them up when things are slack in his aircraft repair and maintenance shop.

The photo shows the frame pretty well. (Note lead dust flying off shotgun star swinger!)

$10 - $20, depending on the range and whether or not you're a member, all of them shoot six stages, turnout tends to be 10-15 for a monthly. None of them has a match booklet for each shoot, water and/or coffee is normally available, one range is a shared facility with a large membership, large newer heated clubhouse, refrigerator w/soft drinks on the honor system, flush toilets, shower, a small kitchen, and a handful of electric hookups for RV's. A number of electric hookups are available at one of the other ranges (maybe 20?), but no running water, just outhouses - it's a dedicated CAS range with very nice covered stage fronts and bays, some of them functional buildings actually, located on ~1000 acres of mixed use property with several other clubs/disciplines on the grounds.

Even only fifteen years ago, 30-40 shooters wasn't uncommon for a monthly match, but not anymore. :(

No posse membership fees
Buckaroos - Free
Young Guns - $5

Everyone else - $10
6 Stages on a dedicated range.  Bring your own lunch/snacks
Anyone that comes for the workday on Saturday shoots the match on Sunday for half price.
Match registration fees go to the main club.  CAS is one shooting discipline offered at the club.  No club membership is required to participate in CAS shoots.
50-50 proceeds stay with the cowboys in the "petty cash" fund.
We do host the state match and the parent club shuts down all other disciplines for 5 days to accomodate set up, tear down, camping, etc.

For my club the fee is $15.00.

In the summer I bring water/Gatorade in ice.  Porta john at the range, running water and toilets in the club house.

No Food, but in the summer heat we may only shoot 4-5 stages and go for ice cream!

Even through Covid we have been averaging 20-24 shooters a month.

We shoot 6 stages, on two bays, that get set up in the AM and put away post shoot, so generally "eye candy" props are at a minimum.
