Popcorn Kelly
Out of curiosity, I'm wondering what the general consensus is here on Accurate No. 5 powder? I came across some in one of the gun shops (when I wasn't seeing anything else), so I purchased a one-pound container to test it out. Hodgdon's literature reads as follows: "Accurate No. 5 is a fast burning, double-base, spherical handgun propellant. This powder is extremely versatile and can be used in many handgun calibers. No. 5 offers a wide performance range from target and Cowboy Action applications to full power defense loads. This powder meters well and strikes a good balance between ballistics and cost efficiency. Made in the USA. I had to extrapolate the load for 105 gr 38's because the published load data only had references for larger weight bullets. I ended up loading 6 grains of powder. I've not run it through a chronograph, but it seems to shoot well at its minimum load. I must say it meters really well (very consistent). I'm interested in reading your comments. Mister Badly
Ahhh. Extrapolation. You don't hear that term often. I've told a few people who asked about shooting my rifle from the hip I was extrapolating.
Cayuse Jack, SASS #19407
It’s a little slow burning for cas but can be used in a pinch. AA #2 would be a better option. You hear a lot about shooters world clean shot, well it is the Czech version of AA2 when it made there. Always check a loading manual substituting powders. Popcorn Kelly
Cayuse Jack, thanks for the comment. In terms of burn rate, any thoughts on how No. 5's burn rate compares to Trail Boss, which is all 've used for 3 years?
Cliff Hanger #3720LR
Here's a powder burn rate chart. Ignore the yellow marks. Accurate No 5 is a fast burning rifle powder but is a slow pistol powder. #41 on the list with most of the powders used in cas high up on the list. Trail Boss is # 19 on the list.
