Bowing up (‘bow’ pronounced as in ‘bow and arrows’) Southern slang for gettin’ all puffed up fer a fight. Alpo
When people are getting ready for a fight - especially if they're a little bit scared - they will move their arms out from their sides a little bit. Raise their shoulders. These two minor movements make them appear to be bulkier. Lean forward a little bit so that they're slightly off their heels and on their toes. This makes them appear taller. The three of these together have the result of making you appear bigger, and therefore quite possibly more dangerous. Hopefully your aggressor decides that getting in a fight with you would be a bad idea. Someone seeing this happen would be apt to make the comment, "That boy done got all bowed up". Sometimes the aggressor will not be scared off, and he is apt to say, "Don't you bow up at me!" Bowing up is not an intentional movement. Quite often you don't realize you have done it, until the danger has passed and you feel yourself relaxing.
Marshal Mo Hare, SASS #45984
Similarly when a cat turns sideways, arches its back, akes its fur stand up and hisses. It is trying to look bigger.

Herbivore doesn't mean harmless. Cape Buffalo eats grass, leaves and such- but M'Bogo is arguably one of the most dangerous animals on a continent full of things that are trying to bite, sting, stomp or otherwise kill or maim you. They are also notorious for catching wind of a hunting party and hunting them back. Imagine a pissed off bull bigger than a Volkswagon with the skills to stalk you back.
