Dutch Nichols, SASS #6461
Has anyone had their bbl cut back to 4.75" ? Results, cost, time frame, etc. I inquired with 2 top smiths who wouldn't cut my bbl but would install their own and re stamp it. I know years ago there were a heck of a lot of cut backs esp older army revolvers. Not sure why today's top smiths won't do it? my thanks in advance. H. K. Uriah, SASS #74619
I would guess it's easier, and probably cheaper, to just install a shorter barrel. I'd be willing to bet you can buy a new barrel from Colt, for example. In fact...https://www.gunpartscorp.com/products/166880
Warden Callaway
Swapping barrels can be completed by generation. First and second have same thread, third is different. Maybe talk to Bill Fuchs at Spring Creek Armory. I'm sure he could swap barrels or cut yours. https://springcreekarmory.com/
Larsen E. Pettifogger, SASS #32933
From what length? You can't shorten a 5 1/2 or the sight slot will protrude into the muzzle. On the longer barrels you can do it but given the price of a new barrel vs. the cost of labor it may be cheaper just to buy a new one. What brand of gun? The Original Lumpy Gritz
OP, what's the bbl length now? Are these Colt's? If so, what generation? What's the type of finish on these guns? OLG
Tully Mars
Most likely it's a labor vs cost issue. I was able to find NIB, 7.5" barrels for my 3rd generation Colt on ebay. In time I will most likely switch back to the original 4 5/8", having the spare barrels at least allows that option. Did the same with an AS/EMF Great Western, went from 7.5" to 5.5". However you should be able to find a gunsmith willing to do whatever you want, provide it's feasible. Tully
