Just noticed a Weatherby rifle for sale, and it is stamped "Atascodera, California"......I didn't realize Weatherby's were made in Cali......

I thought the Vanguard line was made by Howa in Japan.......Sort of surprised when I saw this......

Weatherby moved from Southern California to Atascadero/ Paso Robles in 1986; in 2018, they came to their corporate senses and bailed for Sheridan, Wyoming.

The early rifles were actually built on Mauser actions (including the extra long Brevex actions for African cartridges).  And as @Gracos Kid mentioned, the Vanguards are Japanese Howas.  Nice rifles, as far as I can tell from the two my son has.

I worked at the South Gate shop 14 years until they shut down and moved to Atascadero. All Vanguards are made by HOWA in Japan. The first ones would say Weatherby, South Gate, then Atascadero.....now Sheridan, WY. They all do say made in Japan. 1995 is the year South Gate shut down.

It also looks like it is stamped "MADE IN JAPAN" right under the "VANGUARD".

You are correct.
