Electrical cardioversion

The VA doc sent me to a cardiology specialist due to an arrhythmia they discovered, and the specialist scheduled me for an electrical cardioversion a month from now. They put you out, zap your heart with some sort of defibrillator, you wake up 30 minutes later, and your heart is back in rhythm for the long term. Anybody here undergone the procedure?

Wife had it done twice for her A-fib. Lasted a day the first time and an hour the second. I know of others that it has helped.

My research when the cardiologist decided to try it on the wife lead me to believe the longer you have had the the arrhythmia the less likely the procedure will correct it

Three Foot,

I have not had that specific procedure. However, I have an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) which is designed to shock the heart back into proper rhythm if I start to have arrhythmia. When it was first installed the Doctor tested it. TWICE! I was awake at the time. Basically every muscle in you entire body convulses as hard as it can. NOT FUN. Be glad they do it with you under anesthesia.

My ICD has been replaced as the battery was running low. The second Doctor told me he NEVER tests the ICD with the patient awake and couldn’t understand why the first Dr did that. I think the first Dr was a young smart a$$.

Best of luck with your procedure. Prayers for your successful treatment.

I love my Medtronic Micra Implanted Pacemaker.  About the size of a .22 lr cartridge, totally implanted in the bottom of the right ventricle. no external evidence except for thumb nail size scar, 8+ year battery life, and programable from outside, and working flawlessly as of the one year checkup a month ago.
