Rust on the Plains

Buckshot Bear

Recommended Posts

How did cowboys deal with rust out on the plains? If it rained for two weeks their pistol and holster would have been soaked

and their rifle and rifle scabbard would have been soaked.

Do many original firearms from the period show how hard a life they had?

The Slicker mostly took care of the short guns, along with liberal use of Bear oil.

Long guns were often wrapped in Oil Cloth.

Yes many saw hard use and showed it ...

Bluing IS rust so is browning. I imagine they did the best they could with what they had. Rendered fat a small cleaning kit, scrub it oil it and keep an eye on it.

Most 'working guns' are expected to get used up. Kinda like the bed of a farmers truck. Never seen a farmer or ran her without dents in his truck.

Both of my Grandads passed on guns in fine working condition to me, Vintage 1874 - 1904 ...

Both used their guns aplenty...
